Wearing a prison uniform, white glasses, a black watch and Under Armor tennis shoes, Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of former drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, appeared in a series of photographs that leaked online.
A few weeks after serving his sentence in the FMC Carswell prison, in Texas, USA, Coronel Aispuro was smiling in the snapshots accompanied by another person of African descent.
So far the context in which these images were taken is unknown. There is also no knowledge of who the young companion who appears in each of the photographs is. The truth is that, at the end of 2022, the snapshots were already circulating on social networks.
On November 30, 2021 Emma Coronel was sentenced to three years in prison, after pleading guilty to the crimes of drug trafficking and money laundering linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, a criminal organization led by her husband for decades.
In February 2022, before being transferred to the FMC Carswell prison, the BOP (US Federal Agency for Prisons) revealed a reduction in the sentence of Coronel Aispuro from 35 to 31 months in prison.
With this update, El Chapo’s wife could regain her freedom in September of this year. However, the former drug trafficker would leave much earlier, and this will happen at the end of January or beginning of February, that is, in a few weeks.
It is worth mentioning that good conduct inmates can reduce their prison stay if they serve at least 85% of their sentence. In the case of Emma Coronel, this rule would apply; in addition to the fact that 10 months of her sentence were suppressed while she remained in custody and without the right to bail after her apprehension in the US.
The eventual release of Emma Coronel will occur a few days after the start of the trial against the former Secretary of Public Security of Mexico, Genaro García Luna, accused of international conspiracy to distribute cocaine internationally; conspiracy to distribute and knowingly possess cocaine; and conspiracy to import cocaine.
The former Mexican official was also accused of lying to the US authorities and of corruption in a court in New York. He is also closely linked to the criminal operations of the Sinaloa Cartel and the Beltrán Leyva Cartel, in Mexico.
On January 17, once the jurors are selected, the trial will begin in the Eastern District Court of New York before Judge Brian Cogan, the same jurist who led the trial of “El Chapo” Guzmán, and who convicted the former mob leader to life in prison.
