Xavi Torres has been sentenced to prison in connection with a match-fixing case in Spain. The former Barcelona star was also suspended from playing.

As reported by the Mirror, Torres, a former Barcelona star, stumbled on a match-fixing case in Spain. He was allegedly involved in an attempt to ‘change the outcome of sporting competitions’.

The Spanish Supreme Court finally imposed a 10-month prison sentence and a 22-month ban from playing football. Torres was also fined 400 thousand Euros. The sentence has been reduced, from prison for one year and ban from playing for 2 years.

Xavi Torres, who is now 36 years old, has played twice for the Barcelona senior team. It happened in the 2009 season.

The case stems from the investigation of ‘Caso Osasuna’ season 2013-14, when 11 people were accused of misusing funds in Osasuna. The directors at the club are known to have paid for Torres, who was playing at Real Betis at the time, along with partner Antonio Amaya. Both were asked to beat Real Valladolid on the last matchday of LaLiga. Osasuna was in the middle of a relegation battle, and Valladolid had to lose to stay in LaLiga.

Lugo himself has released a statement in support of the player. “Based on the latest information that has emerged regarding the situation of the player Xavier Torres, Club Deportivo Lugo would like to state the following,” in a statement.

“After issuing a Ruling from the Supreme Court, in relation to the player Xavi Torres, concerning the events prior to his integration as a worker and a footballer for CD Lugo, this entity would like to express its support for him, highlighting his exceptional behavior, professionalism, involvement and commitment shown since the beginning of his time at the club. ; asks for respect, both for the player and for the environment,” the club said in a statement.
