Portalea hosted the first event for the title of ‘Eibar European City of Sport’
The Portalea assembly hall was the setting yesterday for the first event organized for the title of ‘Eibar European City of Sport 2023’. It was a recognition event for the sports agents of the municipality. The mayor, Jon Iraola, and the councilor for sports, Ander Curiel, received this award in Brussels. There were some sixty representatives of clubs, sports venues, educational centers and other agents linked to sport who received copies of the ‘Eibar European City of Sports 2023’ diploma. The video produced for Eibar’s candidacy for this recognition was screened.
After the video, a copy of the diploma was delivered to the different representations that attended the act. Likewise, they will be given a replica of the logo created for this recognition. The event ended with a posthumous tribute from the City Council to the recently deceased Manu Aguirre, promoter of judo and martial arts in Eibar, and creator of the Kalamua judo club, in recognition of his work for fifty years in favor of this sport in eibar. His widow, Marivi Ogando, received a bouquet of flowers from the mayor of Armero and in the company of the current president of Kalamua, Hegoi Esteban, and councilor Ander Curiel. Among the guests there were clubs of all sports modalities, a wide range. The journalist Aitor Buendia and Ikusten, authors of the audiovisual produced for Eibar’s candidacy for this distinction, were also recognized. The Nele Dantza group from Nerea Lodosa gave a beautiful interpretation of an allegory with a sports background.
Last November, the achievement of the recognition of ‘Eibar European City of Sports’ was confirmed, and, at that time, the City Council began the design of a program of sports initiatives that serve to reinforce the commitment and the work that is carried out from Eibar in favor of sport. In fact, some of these initiatives have already materialized, as is the case of the celebration, in April, of the Itzulia Basque Challenge 2023, the first cycling race in Itzulia; the organization in July 2023 of the World Jugger Championship; or the municipal collaboration in the next creation of a local club dedicated to sports with dogs.

The mayor, Jon Iraola, highlighted in this act that “we are clear that the recognition we have obtained is not the exclusive merit of the City Council, but also of all the sports agents that offer a wide variety of proposals and services. Undoubtedly, if Eibar is a European City of Sports, it is because it has an active sports ecosystem, with around thirty clubs that promote sports of all kinds, as well as sports facilities and spaces for people of all ages and physical conditions. ».
