The Dornois Dojo opened its doors for the first time on February 3, 1973. It will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday March 11. Former judokas, teachers and leaders were invited to the festivities (1).
The tatami financed… by the parents
Dornois judo is a story of enthusiasts, punctuated by stages. It begins before the official opening of the club, when families from Dorn and the area carpool to join the Moulinois judo club. Faced with the enthusiasm of children for this martial sport, the Dornois Marcel Brasquies takes charge of the “administrative work” with the Departmental Committee, the Burgundy League and the French Federation of Judo and associated disciplines.
An essential accessory, the tatami is bought second-hand (5,000 francs) from the Saint-Léger-des-Vignes club, which wanted to change its carpet to rice straw plates. Unable to count on any financial assistance from the municipality of the time (2) and the committee, it is the parents who put their hands in their pockets (they will be reimbursed at the end of the second season). The Dornish association “Les Joyeux lurons” will also deposit a support check in the basket.
The judo club introduces self-defense
The 144 m second-hand carpet, stored in the gymnasium, will make it possible to start the lessons, given by Jean Knaebel, from La Machine, and Lionel Martin, from Cercy-la-Tour, both graduates. And the numbers are skyrocketing. Judo was unusual in Dornes, where Dornes Neuville Olympique football and a new basketball club reigned.
The young people, little by little, win colored belts and present themselves on the tatamis of the Nièvre, then dominated by the Dojo nivernais, the clubs of Vauzelles and Cosne-sur-Loire.
Henri Pierrehumbert for a new breath
The arrival of the Swiss Henri Pierrehumbert, a black belt in the sixties, will bring new life to the club. In 1974, he succeeded President Michel Ioan, who had just died. The judokas became eager to take the lead, competitions too, boosted by the first black belts, in 1978: Anglo Baffa, Jimmy Mouzay and Marie-Hélène Naux.

The judo club has several projects
The club begins to organize several departmental, individual or team meetings. On the Dornois tatami judged “very hard” by the Neversois professor, the local junior team (Alain Barré, Bruno Louche, Jean-François Brasquies, Pascal Lebagousse, Patrick Faure, Serge Demas, Serge Aurousseau) takes the title from the Neversois. The women’s team (Marie-Hélène Naux, Martine Thureau, Jeanine Thévenin, Catherine Durand, Pascale Bourbon) won several places of honour. Individually, Alain Barré is twice in a row junior champion of France in the UNSS, Marie-Hélène Naux and Jimmy Mouzay are champions of Burgundy and Benoît Leroy ranks 3rd in France, not to mention two fair play diplomas.

Moments of relaxation are part of the life of the club, which organizes snow outings in Superbesse, participates in the patronal feast of Saint-Julien by creating a flower float, offers demonstrations during the year and perpetuates traditions: tree Christmas, Epiphany, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
In 1991, two prefabricated classrooms were freed up, near the gymnasium, transformed into a dojo by a whole team, united around the president Henri Pierrehumbert and his sister Arlette, treasurer. Changing rooms, toilets and a room for storing equipment were added.

The dojo was inaugurated under the name of Dojo Henri-Pierrehumbert, which disappeared in 2011. His successor, Maurice Serreau, black belt (April 96) remained president for nearly twenty years (2000 to 2019). Under his leadership, are organized in Dornes training courses for sports commissioners and referees, days of kata and grades.
Maurice Serreau himself did an internship in Japan “to better immerse himself in this discipline”. On the Nièvre committee, the young Dornois president held the successive positions of secretary general, president and then treasurer.
In 2019, Sylvie Ramon succeeded him before leaving the presidency, in 2021, to Romain Flammang, black belt (November 2009). His father, Philippe Flammang, has been the club’s teacher since 2014, and its membership is growing, with fifty young judokas to date. It had risen to 125 in 1991!
