  • With 121 athletes, Colombia is preparing to participate in the Bogotá 2023 Youth Parapan American Games.
  • Twelve sports are part of the official competition program of these fairs.
  • Between June 2 and 12, the people of Bogotá will enjoy one of the most important Paralympic festivals.

121 young people between the ages of 12 and 20 make up the Colombian delegation that will take part in the Youth Parapan American Games that will take place in Bogotá from June 2 to June 12. 35 women and 86 men from different departments, represent the present and the future of Paralympic sport in the country.

Parapowerlifting, Paraswimming, soccer for the blind, boccia, PC soccer, goalball, judo, Paraathletics, Paratennis table, Sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis, are the sports that will be in competition during the 11 days of Games and Colombia will have participants in all of them.

“For the preparation of the athletes during 2022, some concentrations were proposed that began in September and ended in December, in which all the sports in which they are part of these youth jousts were taken into account,” said Guillermo Montaño, sports director of the Colombian Paralympic Committee.

This year, the preparation of the Paraathletes will be carried out with the support of the federations of each sport, with the aim of achieving very good results and enjoying this sports festival that will be held in Bogotá for the second time in history.

Julio César Ávila, president of the Colombian Paralympic Committee, also spoke about the Institution’s expectations for this event: “We had a very good performance at the Sao Paulo Games in 2017, we are working with the federations to improve the number of qualified athletes, increase the presence of the female gender and improve the results of the medal we obtained in Sao Paulo. At home we want to ratify or improve the second place we obtained in Brazil”.

At only 16 years old, swimmer Sara Vargas is one of the athletes with the longest history in this delegation, which makes her a benchmark for her teammates and for athletes from other countries who will be competing. Regarding her participation, Sara states that:

“Participating in these Games is a great source of pride for me, these will be my first Youth Parapan American Games, also here at home, so it represents a lot of motivation for me, because I will be able to publicize all the work we have been doing together with my coach and my team ”.

More than a thousand Paraathletes from 25 countries will arrive in the Colombian capital to compete in the Youth Parapan American Games.
