San Juan, Apr 17 (EFE).- Puerto Rico intends to move a delegation of up to 380 athletes to play in San Salvador and Santo Domingo the XXIV edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games, the High Performance Department (DAR) reported on Monday. of the Olympic Committee of Puerto Rico (Copur).
So far, the DAR has selected 130 women and 124 men for a total of 254.
At 67 days before the start of the Central American and Caribbean Games, the president of Copur, Sara Rosario, made a partial presentation of the delegation that will compete in the 2023 edition.
Copur intends to close the list of selected candidates on April 23, and on May 23 it will proceed to register the final group, he added.
“In the long list we put all the possible athletes to compete and all the possible officials to travel,” he said.
The certification criteria for the sports in which Puerto Ricans will take part were established for the Central American and Caribbean Games Veracruz 2014 and Barranquilla 2018.
In individual sports, the best four positions at the regional level are chosen, team sports will be evaluated by candidates for medals and special cases will be by youth perspective and in the Paris 2024 Olympic campaign.
In the first phase of the certified athletes, 3×3 basketball, 5×5 basketball, handball, baseball, wrestling, swimming, softball, table tennis, sailing and volleyball stand out.
The sports with quota that Copur rejected the places were in men’s hockey (18 young people) and in rowing (two places in individual open weight, double men’s pair open weight).
This exclusion was evaluated under the certification criteria, which have prevailed since 2014 in the DAR.
With 186 days to go before the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, the DAR announced 63 places obtained for 98 athletes.
Sports with quotas are: wrestling, swimming, women’s softball, surfing, taekwondo, table tennis, shooting, archery, sailing, and beach volleyball.
