Valmiera U16 girls secure the final against Daugavpils in the drama of two overtimes – Basketball – Sportacentrs.com

17 teams participated in the LJBL U16 girls competition this season. Nine teams played in the national league, which ranked in the following order at the end of the main tournament: 1) Jugla, 2) Saldus, 3) A. Kraukļa VEF school, 4) Jūrmala, 5) BK Kolibri, 6) Tukums, 7) Jaunpils, 8) Rēzekne, 9) Aluksne.

The eight relatively strongest teams competed in the Super League, playing two rounds in the regular season. In the main tournament, the teams finished in the following order: 1) Daugavpils, 2) RBJSS Rīdzene, 3) Valmiera, 4) Liepāja, 5) Ventspils, 6) Riga/Centre, 7) TTP, 8) Jelgava.

The quarterfinals took place on April 21. “RBJSS Rīdzene” beat Saldus girls – 61:56. Daugavpils beat Jugla, the best team of the second division – 68:45. Liepāja managed to beat Ventspils, in whose ranks Charlotte Shepte returned after an injury – 57:41. Valmiera won “Rīga/Centrs” – 88:33.

The semi-finals turned out to be particularly intense. Bertānu Valmiera basketball school won the victory over the girls of “RBJSS Rīdzene” coached by Anita Mikāle in the last seconds of the second overtime – 73:72 (22:8, 11:20, 16:12, 9:18, 7:7, 8:7).

One of Valmiera’s leaders – Darta Veider – quickly received four notes, thus the workload of her colleagues increased. Marta Plorina played more than 45 minutes, scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Sofia Urbanovica had 15 points and 14 rebounds. Paula Pavlović intercepted eight balls.

Three Ukrainian girls played in the Valmiera team coached by Elvja Brokan – Darja Serednicka, Anna Dzjuna and Sofija Kyrica (19 points). Zane Straudovska stood out for Riga players with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Evelina Pauzera 15 points.

Daugavpils, coached by Irina Romanenko, secured a victory over Liepaja – 58:56 (13:14, 17:16, 11:11, 17:15). Mila Luzgina made a long shot 52 seconds before the end of regular time and tied the score (56:56), while Tamirise Simonova scored the winning basket in the last seconds.

Simonova finished the game with 21 points and 11 steals. Mila Luzgina hit one of six long-range shots – but at some point – and scored 16 points. Anna Liepiņa had six points and a +/- score of 16. Maija Aploka responded with 18 points. Ance Kochetkova added 15 points.

Sunday – medal games. The bronze fight will start at 14:00, final at 16:00.
