Soccer: Haaland shoots City to first place

Manchester City have taken the lead in the English Premier League. Coach Josep Guardiola’s side struggled to a 2-1 draw at strong Fulham FC on Sunday, surpassing previous leaders Arsenal. Goalscorer Erling Haaland initiated the victory in the third minute.

The Norwegian striker scored with a penalty kick to make it 1-0 early on. Julian Alvarez (36th) then secured the away win at Craven Cottage on the London Thames with a dream goal from 20 meters. Carlos Vinicius (15th) scored the temporary equalizer for the “Whites”, who, as a promoted team, have secured tenth place to stay up in the league after a nice attack.

However, the “Citizens” did not allow a second goal for Fulham. Manchester City are now a point ahead of Arsenal but, unlike the new second in the table, still have a game to catch up.

50 goals and no end in sight

For the former Salzburg player Haaland, who set several records in his first season in England, it was the 50th goal of the season in all competitions. The Norwegian has 21 more goals than any other Premier League player this season. Since Man City are in the cup final and semi-finals of the Champions League and still have six league games ahead of them, more Haaland goals are likely to follow on the way to a possible triple.

In the battle for third place, Newcastle United and Manchester United continue to march in step. City rivals Marcel Sabitzer, who was substituted in the 86th minute, beat Aston Villa 1-0 at home thanks to a goal from Bruno Fernandes (39′). The “Magpies” defeated bottom side Southampton 3-1 after a deficit of 1-0 and are two points ahead of United in third place.

Dramatic victory for Liverpool

Liverpool are still ten points short of fourth place, after all, the “Reds” pushed past the “Spurs” to fifth place with a dramatic 4: 3 win over Tottenham. The guests were caught off guard in the early stages, Curtis Jones (3rd), Luis Diaz (5th) and Mohammed Salah (15th/penalty) quickly made it 3-0.

But then Tottenham came up and celebrated a supposed point win thanks to Harry Kane (39th), Son Heung Min (77th) and Richarlison (93rd). In the 94th minute, however, Lucas Moura involuntarily served the ball to Diogo Jota, who scored to make it 4:3.

For Maximilian Wöber and Leeds United, however, the season remains a ride on a knife’s edge. Away, “The Whites” lost 4-1 to Bournemouth and are just a point clear of the relegation zone. Wöber came on from the 34th minute.
