The play-off system was hard to swallow for Jan Vertonghen. The Devils defender is on vacation and he does not know what he will do in the coming days.
The Red Devil recalled it in Football is Life, a podcast hosted by Daley Blind and Siem de Jong. “The Belgian play-off system is so well constructed that there are six teams that have vacations now. We missed the top eight and are sent on vacation, if we don’t get relegated. It’s too ridiculous to be described.”
This is not the first time Vertonghen has conveyed this message. “It doesn’t hold up. We had a bad display with our team, I have to point that out. In the second and third week of June, the internationals still have to play international matches.
Vertonghen was also called to order. Someone from the Belgian medical staff called me and said: “Jan, you now have 54 days of vacation. I said to myself: “What, you’re not serious!”. Then it’s thinking: should I take a vacation, should I train individually, should I do strength training? There are so many things that go through your head.”
And what about after this period? “The week after the international break, I can join Anderlecht for the preparation. If you look at it from this angle, these matches with the national team are only preparation matches. I will indeed come back from vacation at this I’ll make sure I’m fit and trained in a group. But it’s really an experience.”
