Bas Sibum was appointed as trainer of Roda JC on Tuesday. The current assistant coach of FC Emmen signs a contract until mid-2025 with the ailing club from Kerkrade, starting his first job as head coach.
Edwin de Graaf is currently still a trainer of Roda JC. He was appointed in January to succeed Jurgen Streppel, who surprisingly left Kerkrade during the season to become technical director at Helmond Sport.
Roda announced last month that it does not want to continue with De Graaf. Under his leadership, the Limburgers perform disappointingly. Roda JC has not won seven games in a row in the Kitchen Champion Division and only occupies fifteenth place.
Sibum must provide a new impulse to the ‘Koempels’. Roda JC was relegated from the Eredivisie in the 2017/2018 season and has since failed to return to the highest level.
Sibum only gained experience as a youth trainer and assistant
It is the first time that Sibum will stand for the group as head coach. The former midfielder does have experience as a youth coach and assistant coach at FC Emmen. He has been Dick Lukkien’s right-hand man with the team from Drenthe for several years now.
In his playing career, Sibum played for several Dutch clubs. He wore the shirt of FC Emmen, FC Twente, Roda JC, NEC and Heracles Almelo. The midfielder also played for Alemannia Aachen and Waasland-Beveren.
“Bas knows the DNA of the club and is familiar with the cow mentality,” says football affairs manager Rob Servais of Roda. “With his work ethic, way of playing and huge winner’s mentality, he fits perfectly with the Roda JC that we strive for.”
