In an interview, Sabine Tschäge talks about her role as the first female head coach of the Germany eight, the compatibility of sport and work for athletes – and what dampens the desire for rowing in Germany.

You have been part of the coaching team at the Dortmund federal base since 2021, and since the surprising departure of Uwe Bender you have also been the head coach of the parade boat. Have you been able to put your stamp on the Germany eight since then?

I don’t really want to push it that much. We want to work out of conviction. I would rather speak of punctuation. Of course it was a change for me in Dortmund. But as is so often the case in rowing, we first try to make boats faster. That is the supreme principle. We are also pursuing this very sustainably. Of course I had to grow into it first. It all came a little quicker than expected with the task that I then took over the management in October, then Uwe Bender’s health failure. It’s been a turbulent few months.
