The Golden State Warriors of the 2015-16 season made history. They broke the record for Chicago Bulls for the most wins in a regular season in league history NBAsurpassing what the legendary team of Michael Jordan had achieved 30 years earlier.
Unlike the Bulls, however, GSW could not complete the job in the playoffs. They were up 3-1 in the NBA Finals and allowed the Cleveland Cavaliers to come back and beat them.
It is remarkable that since then people have made fun of them. And according to team owner Joe Lacob, even Michael Jordan made sure to remind him that “73-9 means nothing without a ring“.
Michael Jordan and his controversial statement against Golden State Warriors
“In the collective bargaining agreement negotiations, I was on the labor committee and I was in New York having dinner with Michael Jordan and other owners.Lacob told CBS Sports. “We were six. In fact, Dan was one of them, Dan Gilbert. Anyway, Michael Jordan… people were drinking and having fun, but there was a point where he said, you know, ‘73 doesn’t mean shit‘. Yes, Michael Jordan said that. And I looked at it and decided not to make a big deal out of it. I told him, you know, you’re right, we didn’t win it, we had to get better.“he added.
However, Lacob didn’t take it personally. He says he still values the 73-win season and doesn’t consider it a failure, unlike how some players may feel.
