Cable Ski Benidorm is a school of wakeboarding and water skiing for both beginners and international competitors, which is characterized by being the only one in the world on the sea, and also the longest-lived, since 1966.
It was in 1966 when Humberto Armas decided to take a risk with an unknown and interesting project that he had seen in Germany: four towers through which a cable passes and where several skiers can practice water skiing at the same time without the need for a boat. Thus, after having traveled the entire Spanish coast, he opted for Benidorm due to its crystalline waters and its microclimate, when the Avenida del Mediterráneo was still an immense field of orange trees. In this way the first Cable Ski in the world was born, which has been followed by new Cables, with more than two hundred today.
Over the years, new modalities have been introduced. So are the traditional two skis and the kneeboard (sitting) ideal for beginners, the mono-ski (with which the slalom of speed), the figure (the classic of pirouettes), and towards the year 1996 the Wakeboarding, a board similar to snowboarding in the snow, which revolutionizes the extreme sport for ramp jumping, slider tricks and other striking maneuvers; a fashionable sport among young people, in line with snowboarding, surfing or skateboarding.
Unlike the boat modality, where a specific boat is necessary for each wakeboarder plus two crew members, the Cable Ski modality allows, with its mechanical towing system, that several can practice, simultaneously without the need for a boat, through a guide-cable located over the sea supported by towers. In the case of the Cable Ski in Benidorm, the longest in Spain with a length of 1 km and 4 towers, it can carry up to 12 wakeboarders or skiers simultaneously at different speeds: from 27 km/h to 58 km/h (only for professionals). This helps to popularize the sport, to practice it with the family or in a group, and to generate a solid and integrated fan base.
In addition, it generates an influx of spectators who come from the beach to the platform attracted by the pirouettes or “tricks” performed by the most advanced skiers; spectators who applaud, take pictures and many of them end up starting out in this complete sport.
With the school and the program for schoolchildren, Cable Ski becomes almost a youth camp in July and August where the new promises take advantage of their summer vacations to train their favorite sport. There is no age limit, it admits children from 6 years old and has some veterans who are well over 80.
