Indonesia’s results in the Sudirman Cup from time to time

Jakarta

Asa Indonesia “returned” the trophy Sudirman Cup once again not accomplished. The steps had stopped again. The Red and White Team, which once won this event, had to bury their dreams again.

Indonesian step in Sudirman Cup 2023, which was held in Suzhou, China, has been stopped in the quarterfinals. Anthony Ginting cs lost 0-3 to the home team in the quarterfinals.

This result at the same time made the Red and White squad have to harbor a longing to be able to return side by side with the trophy from the event whose name was inspired by this important figure in Indonesia.

A Brief History of the Sudirman Cup

In its history, the Sudirman Cup event is very close to Indonesia. The team badminton event which is held every two years was born as a form of appreciation and respect for the figure of Dick Sudirman.

During his lifetime, Dick Sudirman was an important figure in the world of badminton. Not only in Indonesia but also in the world.

Dick Sudirman is one of the founders of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) and has also served as Chair of PBSI for 22 years.

He also took part in merging two world badminton organizations, the International Badminton Federation (IBF) and the World Badminton Federation (WBF).

On June 10, 1986, Dick Sudirman died. It was Suharso Suhandinata, a close colleague, who then took the initiative to immortalize Sudirman’s services in the badminton world into a mixed team championship.

The offer was accepted by IBF in 1988. A year later, the inaugural edition of the Sudirman Cup was held at Istora Senayan, Jakarta.

The attachment of the Indonesian element to the Sudirman Cup lies not only in the name of the event. The shape of the Sudirman Cup trophy is also very thick with Indonesian nuances: At the top of the cup, there is a miniature of the Borobudur Temple. The bottom of this trophy made in Bandung is also made of native Indonesian teak.

Indonesia Wins the Sudirman Cup in the First Edition

In the 1989 Sudirman Cup, which was held at Istora Senayan, Indonesia was not just the host. The first edition of the Sudirman Cup was also won by the Red and White squad.

  • WS : Sarwendah Kusumawardhani, Susi Susanti
  • MD : Eddy Hartono, Rudy Gunawan
  • WD : Verawaty Fadjrin, Yanti Kusmiati
  • XD : Aryono Miranat, Minarti Timur

In the 1989 Sudirman Cup final, against South Korea, Indonesia fell behind first after Eddy Hartono/Rudy Gunawan lost to Park Joo Bong/Kim Moon-soo in a fierce three-game match.

The fate of Indonesia was even on the brink after in the second party South Korea increased their advantage thanks to the victory of Hwang Hye-young/Chung So-young over Verawaty Fajrin/Yanti Kusmiati.

However, the third party later became Indonesia’s turning point. Susy Susanti’s victory over Lee Young-suk in three games started the rise of Red and White.

Indonesia leveled the score with South Korea through Eddy Kurniawan’s victory over Sung Han-kook in the fourth party, before locking in the title after Eddy Hartono/Verawaty Fajrin defeated Park Joo Bong/Chung So-young.

Year after year passed, Indonesia has never again been able to win the Sudirman Cup. Success in 1989 is still the only success for the Red and White team to triumph in this event.
