This was announced by the organizers of Roland Garros of the year a few days ago.
The aim is to get a more equal distribution between the players. In this respect, the prize money for the losers in the first round was increased – as well as for the qualifying rounds and the wheelchair and quad competitions.
In the individual fields, an increase of 9.1 percent was achieved compared to 2022, for the losers in the first three rounds an increase of 11 to 13 percent.
Exactly how much prize money do Djokovic, Alcaraz and Co. earn at the French Open?
Specifically, the winners of the women’s and men’s competitions receive a winner’s check for 2.3 million euros (previous year: 2.2 million euros), for the elimination in round 1 there is still 69,000 euros (in 2022: 62,000 euros). For reaching the 2nd round then 97,000 euros (2022: 86,000 euros), for round 3 a whopping 142,000 euros (2022: 125,800 euros).
Prize money 2023 (in euros) | Prize money 2022 (in euros) | |
winner | 2.300.000 | 2.200.000 |
Finale | 1.150.000 | 1.100.000 |
semifinals | 630.000 | 600.000 |
Quarterfinals | 400.000 | 380.000 |
round of 16 | 240.000 | 220.000 |
3rd round | 142.000 | 125.800 |
2nd round | 97.000 | 86.000 |
1 round | 69.000 | 62.000 |
Qualifying for the main draw is therefore a major goal for many players, with the guaranteed 69,000 euros and the associated planning security throughout the year.
French Open also increase prize money for qualification
In the qualification area there is also an increase of 11.8 percent across all rounds. You get 16,000 euros for the immediate elimination, 22,000 euros for the second round and 34,000 euros for the qualifying final. For reaching the main field then just the amount for the first round out (or just: the qualification achieved).
In the wheelchair category, the winner receives 60,000 euros (for round 1: 8,000 euros); in doubles, the winning team gets 20,000 euros (in round 1: 5,000 euros). In quad singles there is also 60,000 euros for the winner, in doubles there is also 20,000 euros for the team.
The doubles final is about 590,000 euros
In regular doubles, 590,000 euros will be paid out to the winning team, with the finalists receiving 295,000 euros. For the end in round 1 you have to share 17,000 euros – rough mathematical knowledge of the division process is therefore required.
And in mixed: there’s 122,000 euros for the winning team and 5,000 euros for the starter.
The 2023 French Open main draw begins on May 28th.
