CF MTL: David Choinière and his brother Mathieu faced each other at the Canadian Championship

The semi-final match of the Canadian Championship which resulted in a 2-0 victory for CF Montreal against Forge FC could also be called: “the Choinière derby”.

Once again, the two brothers found themselves on a soccer field in different uniforms. For a third time, CF Montreal had the best of its rivals and David Choinière would like to be able to find the Montreal team instead of losing once again to his brother Mathieu.

“If you ask me today if I want to come back to MLS, I say yes without hesitation. I’m sick of losing to my brother. I will see him again tonight. They’ve been beating us for three years in a row. I’m a winner and I don’t like to lose,” mentioned the Forge FC midfielder.

Obviously, the talk was much more positive about the match at his younger brother who is spreading his wings this season with the CFM. Mathieu impresses with two goals to his name and his 12 starts in 13 games this season. He enjoyed that on-court clash with his brother on Wednesday night.

“These are memorable moments. These are memories that will come back to me all my life. We talked about it when we were young to find out if it happened and that it all happened, it’s magnificent, ”described Mathieu after the victory.

David Choinière played his last game with Montreal in 2018. While the main interested party feels ready to return to the team, head coach Hernan Losada had good words for the one he unsurprisingly compared to Matthew.

“He has the same stamina, the same speed, he is a very interesting player. He has the same face as Mathieu, laughed Losada about David.

For his part, Mathieu hopes that his brother will have this new chance with the team in MLS. He sees aspects to his game that could allow his 26-year-old big brother to succeed in Montreal.

“My brother has great qualities. He handles the ball well and finds openings. We saw it today. He hurt us at times. He has plenty of qualities and I believe he has the level of play for the next level. The best is ahead of him with his qualities, he can hurt any team,” said 24-year-old Mahtieu.

“Playing together would be wonderful for the family. It would be amazing,” he concluded.

It remains to be seen whether the next time David and Mathieu meet on the pitch will be as opponents or team-mates.
