The badminton world is in a frenzy because of the ‘forbidden technique’ that can never be stopped… Korea too

The World Badminton Federation (BWF) has decided to ban the spin serve until after the 2024 Paris Olympics. The ‘spin serve’, a technique that some Korean players also use, refers to a technique in which the cork of the shuttlecock is rotated by hand to give spin and serve.

BWF held a board meeting on the 29th of last month (local time) and decided to ban spin serve until after the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will be held in September 2024.

The BWF Council announced that after consultation with the badminton community, it was decided that it would be best to ban spin serve for the next 15 months so as not to affect the Olympic and Paralympic qualifying period and the competition itself.

BWF Secretary-General Thomas Lund repeatedly emphasized that “BWF welcomes innovation in badminton,” but explained the reason for the ban before introducing the spin serve in earnest, saying “more evidence of its potential effectiveness is needed.”

Previously, criticism continued that when using a spin serve in badminton, it went over the net in the wrong direction and the rally did not take place, damaging the essence of badminton.

Kim Jong-woong, executive director of the Korea Badminton Federation, who attended the BWF general meeting, also strongly supported the ban on the spin serve, saying, “It is difficult for players on the other side to receive the serve because the cork is rotated like a top and then served with a racket.”

Currently, some players in the Korean national team, such as Choi Sol-gyu, serve as spin serve.

Korean badminton legend coach Lee Yong-dae also strongly supported the ban on spin serve. In an interview with JTBC on the 31st of last month (Korean time), he emphasized, “The charm of badminton is that the shuttlecock goes back and forth, but if you put a spin serve from the start, the rally doesn’t go, so badminton is less fun.”
