At Grand Slam level, the 2023 French Open was the big breakthrough for Thiago Seyboth Wild. After the Brazilian had only been in the main draw at the US Open 2020 to be eliminated in round 1, the 23-year-old made a big splash in Roland Garros. The grandiose 5-set win against No. 2 seeded Daniil Medvedev was followed by a win in four sets against Argentinian Guido Pella. In the third round match against Yoshihito Nishioka, the current No. 172 in the world rankings thought he was on the road to victory for a long time before he had to bow out in five sets in the round of the last 32.

Ambiguous appearance on the court

But just the appearance against the 27-year-old Japanese revealed numerous facets of his personality. On the one hand, the strength and talent in his game, which makes tennis experts ecstatic. On the other hand, you often see the aggressive and angry player yelling at himself, raising his arms, frowning and venting his anger on the implement.

Allegations of violence from his ex-partner

Last year saw the first public headlines linking Seyboth Wild to aggressive behavior. His former partner Thayane Lima, who became well known in Brazil as an influencer and now lives in the USA, accused the tennis pro of physical violence and therefore also filed a complaint. So far, however, there has not been a court hearing, as both parties are currently no longer resident in Brazil.

Chat histories reveal radical right-wing sentiments

As the Brazilian newspaper O’Globo reports, alleged Whatsapp chats between the two ex-partners paint an extreme picture of the ideal orientation of the Seyboth Wild family. It speaks of extremely racist attitudes and comparisons from the Nazi era.

Missed opportunity for clarification

At the press conferences in Roland Garros, Seyboth Wild rejected all questions from the international press on topics off the court. In addition to the missed opportunity to reach the round of 16 for the first time in a Grand Slam tournament, he also missed the opportunity to present his view of things in the private sphere and to position himself clearly. The questions on the explosive topic are unlikely to decrease in the coming tournaments.
