Austria’s great hope for youngsters, Joel Schwärzler, is already in the quarter-finals of the junior competition at the French Open in Paris. The number 15 seeded Vorarlberger defeated the Argentinian Fernando Cavallo 7:5 6:3 in the third round on Wednesday.
In the quarter-finals, Schwärzler meets either the Bolivian Juan Carlos Prado Angelo, who was number eight in the junior competition, or the Czech Jan Hrazdil.
Schwärzler is looked after in Paris by ÖTV sports director Jürgen Melzer. The 17-year-old left-hander is a former U16 European champion and was born in Johannesburg. His strengths are the serve and the forehand.
