German Women’s National Team Advances to Quarter-Finals at European Championships

Things are going well for the German women’s national team at the European Championships: After a convincing victory over Slovakia, Marie Gülich and Co. qualified for the quarter-finals.

It is already the most successful European championship for a German women’s national team in 26 years. After beating Slovakia 79:69, national coach Lisa Thomaidis’ team qualified for the quarter-finals. The last time a DBB selection was successful was in 1997, when Marlies Askamp’s team took bronze at the end.

Marie Gülich excelled against Slovakia: With 26 points, the center player set a new personal record in the DBB jersey, with the reigning Spanish champion hit 13 of her 18 shots from the field. Gülich also had nine rebounds, four assists and two steals. “That was an unbelievable performance by Marie,” Thomaidis praised her center player. “From day one I was impressed with the team’s ability to play high-low and post frequently. This is probably the best matchup for us.”

A 5-0 run late in the second quarter was followed by an 8-2 start into the third period and the German team had a 52-38 lead. Germany maintained this double-digit lead for the rest of the game.

A rate of 53.3 percent from the field and 25 assists with 14 turnovers testify to the team’s best offensive performance to date at the tournament. “We played really well, let the ball run and made progress,” said the top scorer about the success. In addition to Gülich, the second Spain legionnaire also impressed, Leonie Fiebich had 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.

In the quarter-finals on Thursday from 8:45 p.m. there will be a duel with Spain. The Iberians won their preliminary group A and are considered one of the title contenders.
