LTDS – The Veveysan Minh Quang Pham puts his nose in the net of high-level badminton
Minh Quang Pham will step into the big leagues next weekend in Krakow, Poland. The badminton player from Vevey will compete in the European Games, his first major international competition among the elites. We met him before this deadline. It was Saturday in “La Tablée des Sports”.
Minh Quang Pham’s badminton career will take a new turn next weekend. At 22, the Veveysan is preparing to take part in its first major international tournament. He was selected to represent Switzerland in mixed doubles. 132nd in the world in this discipline, the Vaudois was drafted for this event organized in Krakow, Poland. He will pair up with Caroline Racloz, his usual partner. The pair will aim to get out of their group and thus reach the knockout stage.
The European Games, a beginning
This experience will therefore be unprecedented for the resident of the national center in Bern. But he intends to make this event a starting point. For the doubles specialist (ranked 133rd in the world for men), the dream would be to one day be able to participate in the Olympic Games, which no Swiss duo has ever managed to achieve in badminton. The Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 are in sight.
To accomplish such a feat, Minh Quang Pham will have to continue his progress. A constant progression since he no longer militates in the age category of less than 19 years. At the start of 2021, the Swiss mixed doubles champion emerged beyond the 1,000th planetary rank in his favorite disciplines.
Becoming a pro player, an easy decision to make
Established in Bern for three years, the Veveysan practice badminton as a professional player. He trains every morning and every afternoon from Monday to Friday with a dozen other residents of the structure managed by Swiss Badminton. The young athlete from the Riviera usually takes advantage of the weekend, if there are no tournaments, to go home.
This decision to devote herself 100% to her passion allowed her to move up the ranks more quickly. The Vaudois is now one of the best specialists in the country. A resident of the Lausanne club, he was recently crowned champion of the national league A. Enough to add a new line to a prize list which is more and more extensive. On the international scene, Minh Quang Pham had also reached the quarter-finals of the U19 European Championships in Tallinn, Estonia, in 2018.
14 years after making his debut in this sport, the badminton player from Vevey continues to grow. The next step in this process is scheduled for next Monday, with its first match at the European Games in Krakow. We went to discover Minh Quang Pham on Saturday in our program “La Tablée des Sports”, a few days before his departure for Poland.
