Inspiring Debut: Mexican Team Dominates Honduras 4-0 in Gold Cup Opener

The Mexican team beat Honduras 4-0 on a night of debuts in Houston. El Tri started his participation in the Gold Cup on the right foot on the same night that Jaime Lozano began his journey as coach of the Aztec team.

Double by Luis Romo and goals by Orbelín Pineda and Luis Chávez in a game that gives a giant halo of hope and that, at least after 90 minutes, returns the illusion after some hard weeks that Mexican soccer has experienced.

It is the Tri that all of Mexico longs for. It is the Tri that all of Mexico wants to see. It is the Tri that identifies us. And of course, it is the Tri that we want, go up until it debuts in the World Cup.

Rumble the NRG! The anthems of Honduras and Mexico sound

True, it is too early to talk about a reality. But today there was fellowship. On the field as in the stands, something that we had not seen for many months, neither with Gerardo Martino nor with Diego Cocca.

Mexico played by note. And he did it fast. He struck early to get rid of any nervousness. Barely at minute 1, Luis Romo took a left-footed shot to beat Luis López, the famous ‘Buba’ who normally thrives against El Tri. We all shouted it, the selected team celebrated it together and Jaime Lozano shouted it with all the rancor in the world.

Honduras was the perfect victim. A highly questioned selection that is going through its worst moment in the last 20 years.

El Tri played and unloaded the ball. They played well on the wings, with Jesús Gallardo and Uriel Antuna opening the field; with Luis Romo doing it as an ‘all-rounder’ as in his best times at Cruz Azul and with Orbelin Pineda, as well as Luis Chávez assisting as second nine behind Henry Martín. But beyond everything, solidarity and commitment to the teammate and to the team were shown.

The second soon arrived. Mexico had forgiven two clear ones, first through ‘Chiquito’ Sánchez and another from Orbelín. Luis Romo would not forgive the third. The Monterrey player closed the clamp after a corner that was combed to the far post to make it 2-0.

For the second half, Jaime Lozano did not move his pieces. Honduras improved footballingly in its first minutes, however, once again, Mexico’s goal would arrive very soon after an excellent triangulation between Orbelín Pineda and Henry Martín that ended with a good definition by the AEK Athens footballer for the 3-0.

The fourth nail came through Luis Chávez after a mistake at the start of Honduras, the Pachuca footballer found himself with a rejection at the top of the area to put, from his left foot, a new score for Mexico.

The fifth goal was still sung, the long-awaited goal from Santiago Giménez, the same one that came, but offside. The whistler did not hesitate to cancel the score correctly.

In the end, the marker didn’t move anymore. Today the ominous cry did not appear and today there was communion between the players and the fans, a reconciliation that will not take place after 90 minutes, but it is a good start. Jaime Lozano generates identity and, above all, illusion. The first step, of many, has been taken. As progress is made, time will put everyone and everything in its place.

For now, this is the way. This is the Tri that people want, yearn for and desire. It will not be simple, but that is what is requested.

It just can’t be! Giménez’s goal does not count for one foot
