The divorce of Bayer 04 and sport manager Tim Steidten caused a stir in the industry in March. After all, the sports manager was one of the driving forces when it came to squad planning and scouting for new players at the Bundesliga club. A job he did in Leverkusen with above-average results in collaboration with the then head of scouting and squad planning Kim Falkenberg, who was recently promoted to head of recruitment at Bayer 04.
In the conversations that led to the separation, Steidten explained “that I would like to start a new project”, one in which he could make more decisions himself. This will now be the case in London, where, according to kicker information, he will start his new job at West Ham United as the main director for football from July 1st.
Rice sale creates leeway – More freedom than Chelsea
Steidten’s good eye for new players earned him the nickname “Pearl Diver” because he was instrumental in the transfers of previously unknown professionals such as Edmond Tapsoba, Jeremie Frimpong and Piero Hincapie at Leverkusen. Going forward, West Ham United will capitalize on Steidten’s qualities, which are likely to have a bigger presence in the transfer market after a disappointing 14th place finish last Premier League season and the upcoming €100m sale of international player Declan Rice.
At West Ham, Steidten finds greater design options than, for example, at Chelsea, who works with several sports directors and with whom Steidten also had discussions. At his new club, on the other hand, he only has to report directly to the club owner.
Steidten is therefore moving to the Hammers and thus to a direct competitor of Bayer 04. West Ham finally qualified for the Europa League as winners of the Europa Conference League, in which the factory club will also play next season.
