Kai Havertz Joins Arsenal, Becomes Second Most Expensive Signing in Club History

Kai Havertz will lace up his shoes for Arsenal in the future.

As the “Gunners” confirm on Wednesday, the 24-year-old German comes from city rivals Chelsea and signs a contract until 2028.

The “Blues” are said to collect 70 million euros for the DFB international. Bonuses could even increase the sum to 75 million euros.

Havertz is the second most expensive exit in Chelsea history, only Eden Hazard (€115m) brought in more money when he was sold to Real Madrid in 2019. On the Arsenal side, the German is now the second most expensive entry in history. Only Nicolas Pepe (80 million euros) cost more in 2019.

Havertz: “The aim is to win trophies”

“It’s super exciting to be part of this great club. This club has a rich history and I hope we can achieve a lot together,” Havertz said in a first statement. “The goal is to win trophies and I will give everything for that – for the club and for the fans.”

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta said: “Kai is a top-quality player. He’s versatile and intelligent. He brings extra strength to our midfield and variety to our game.”

Anger about leak

Havertz, who came from Bayer Leverkusen in 2020 for 80 million euros, also said goodbye to the Chelsea fans. “It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter, saying goodbye to the club that has become my second home and to the incredible fans who have supported me throughout this incredible journey,” said Havertz. “The club will always be in my heart.”

Bitter for the German. The first pictures of him in the Arsenal jersey appeared on the Internet on Tuesday. The transfer had not yet been officially announced. “I would have preferred you to hear from me first what I think about my departure from Chelsea. It’s not my style and I’m upset that you had to hear it that way,” Havertz said.
