Iga Świątek has to worry about her start in Wimbledon.
The 22-year-old Pole canceled her semi-finals at the WTA tournament in Bad Homburg on Friday due to illness. “I had a restless night because of a fever and possibly food poisoning,” wrote the world number one on Twitter.
“I’m not able to perform today and I have to take care of myself,” added Swiatek, but emphasized that he hoped to get better soon. Previously, she had marched through the tournament largely effortlessly and had also defeated Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) in three sets. Due to Swiatek’s withdrawal, Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti reached the final without a fight.
After her third triumph at the French Open a few weeks ago, Swiatek is considered the top favorite for the title in Wimbledon alongside defending champion Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka. The Chinese Zhu Lin is waiting for her in round one. Last year, Swiatek failed in the third round against Alize Cornet (France).
