Team – Lothar Matthäus criticizes Hansi Flick: “The national coach has to deliver now”

Record national player Lothar Matthäus has criticized the constant experiments in the German team and urgently demanded results.

“The national coach has to deliver now,” wrote the 62-year-old before the international match in Gelsenkirchen against Colombia in his column at skysport.de: “I’m slowly getting tired of the testing, trying out and pushing players and positions back and forth and see.”

The obviously not well-rehearsed team of national coach Hansi Flick “is running out of time”, said the world champion of 1990: “One year before the European Championships at home, the spark must jump from the pitch to the ranks and a euphoria must be generated, which culminates at the tournament experienced.”

The players must “know as soon as possible what is required of them and who has to deliver what in which position,” explained Matthäus, denouncing that there were “no mechanisms, little understanding.” In his opinion, however, “the quality of our players” means that the DFB team “must be among the top four in Europe. Quite simply.”

The former world footballer would make a fundamental shift in personnel and move captain Joshua Kimmich from central midfield back to right-back (“we obviously don’t have a really good alternative”). This would free up space in the center for the in-form Ilkay Gündogan. As a partner for the Manchester City star in midfield, Matthäus would like Jamal Musiala on the ten and Dortmund’s Emre Can as a classic six.

Kimmich, whom he had recently criticized, expressly praised Matthäus in his column as a “world-class player”, the 28-year-old was “a mentality monster” and reminded him “of myself when I was young”.
