During the final of the European Games, the Fosséen lost, in three sets (21/16, 16/21, 11/21), against Viktor Axelsen yesterday.
He approached this match without complex. With the carelessness of his young age. Opposed to a cador of international badminton, in the person of the Dane Viktor Axelsen (N.1 world), Christo Popov (21 years old, N.31) did not deserve. He fought with his weapons. And even made the reigning Olympic champion tremble for more than one set.
But that was unfortunately not enough since he lost in three sets (21/16, 16/21, 11/21). For his first individual final in a major European tournament, the young Provençal showed that he had to be counted on for the next few years. By being very fair in his game during the first set, before breaking down physically. “From the second race, I was in the hard. I’m on my twelfth game and it felt today (read yesterday)”, estimates the Fosséen.
Christo Popov dates with the future
After winning bronze in doubles with his older brother Toma Junior (24), Christo Popov won his second medal at the European Games, which also allowed him to score valuable points in view of qualifying for the Paris-2024 Olympics.
“There are many positive things to take from this game and this competitioninsists the former champion of France. Whether it’s my brother or me, I’m very proud of the level of play we’ve offered here. This validates the work that we have been doing in recent weeks. To have two Frenchmen on the podium is great. This medal is a moment of pleasure! This is my first event of this level where I qualified in singles. I validated my ticket on the last tournament and I finished in the final. I tell myself that I fought well and that I deserve what is happening to me.”
In Poland, Christo Popov has definitely made a date with the future.
