VfL Bochum has hired another assistant coach. As the club announced on Tuesday, Markus Feldhoff is now supporting the coaching team around head coach Thomas Letsch, assistants Frank Heinemann and Jan Fießer and goalkeeping coach Peter Greiber. The former Bundesliga professional signed a contract until the end of June 2025.

Feldhoff appeared as a player in 158 Bundesliga games (25 goals), 34 second division games (six goals) and also in the Champions League for Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Borussia Mönchengladbach and VfL Wolfsburg, among others. After his active career, the 48-year-old gained experience as an assistant coach at several locations, including Werder Bremen and Hertha BSC. Most recently, he was the main coach in the 2020/21 season for 13 games at VfL Osnabrück on the sidelines, but with only four wins and two draws he was unable to prevent relegation to the second division in the relegation against FC Ingolstadt.

“Will complement the coaching team perfectly”

Marc Lettau, Technical Director of VfL, welcomes Markus Feldhoff as “an expert who, after a long professional career, has made the seamless transition to becoming a coach. Markus knows what his job profile demands and will complement our coaching team perfectly.”

“As a child of the Ruhr area, VfL Bochum always accompanied me, mostly as an opponent,” says the 48-year-old about his commitment at Castroper Strasse. “What has been achieved here at VfL over the past few years is great. I have always seen VfL Bochum as a member of the Bundesliga and am now looking forward to doing my part to ensure that it stays that way.”

Heinemann wants to step down

The step was necessary because assistant coach Heinemann wanted to reduce the scope of his activities at his own request. Lettau: “Funny Heinemann is a VfL veteran with a big blue and white heart. After almost four decades in professional football, he would like to take things a little easier, which is understandable. We are currently in talks about what opportunities will open up for him in the sporting environment of the squad of licensed players. We would like to continue to have him on board as an excellent professional.”
