Alcaraz Advances to Third Round at Wimbledon

Alcaraz does the job

The Center Court crowd didn’t see the best version of Carlos Alcaraz, but the Spaniard ensured his presence in the 3rd round after a three-set success against Frenchman Alexandre Müller (6-4, 7-6, 6- 3) in 2h32 of play. He awaits the winner of the duel between Jason Kubler and Nicolas Jarry.

Runes on his hand

He continues his apprenticeship on grass and is doing quite well for the moment. At 20, Holger Rune does not yet have much experience but he knows how to assume his status. The Dane showed it on Friday in the second round of Wimbledon against the Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, 57th in the world and certainly a clay court specialist. Despite a certain lack of sensations, he won (6-3, 7-6, 6-4) and 2h39 of play. In the 3rd round, he will find Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Botic van de Zandschulp.

Not everything was easy for Rune this Friday. He thus ran after the score at the very start of the match before taking the lead. The second set was no easier, as the Dane needed a tie-break to make the gap, and he was broken again first in the third. The fact remains that, despite his 47 (!) unforced errors, he always knew how to react to go back in front (45 winning shots also against 23 for his opponent). If he wants to claim the final victory, he will nevertheless have to increase in power.

Berrettini and Zverev have a date

A few days before Wimbledon, he no longer knew where he was. Some rumors even rustled about a possible break in his career. But Matteo Berrettini has obviously regained the desire and it shows at the All England Club. Already convincing to get rid of his compatriot Lorenzo Sonego at the start, the Italian shifted into high gear on Friday to completely master Alex de Minaur in three sets (6-3, 6-4, 6-4) in 2h11 in the 2nd round . The Australian was however confident and came out of a final at Queen’s.

The finalist of the 2021 edition notably served the fire (13 aces and 88% success behind his first, or 7 small points lost out of 57), surpassing his rival in power. He also did not concede the slightest break, resisting in particular at the start of the 2nd set to keep the momentum in his favor. With 38 winners (against 16), he recalled that the grass was the best surface for his game. His next match will be an even tougher test since he will play Alexander Zverev.

The German left a set along the way in his victory against the Japanese Yosuke Watanuki in the 2nd round, but he did not tremble more than that to reach the 16th finals. He signed a victory in four sets (6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2) in 2h25 on court n°2.

Hurkacz stops Musetti and waits for Djoko

Decidedly, the main protagonists of the 2021 edition are rebelling. If it was not as catastrophic as that of Berrettini, the preparation on grass of Hubert Hurkacz was not reassuring for all that. And yet, the Pole, semi-finalist two years ago, finds his best level at the right time. Lorenzo Musetti was able to verify this on court 12 where he suffered the wrath of his opponents, losing in three sets (7-6, 6-4, 6-4) and 2:04 in this expected duel between the seeded 14 and 17 of the tournament.

After a very tight first act between the two players, Hurkacz clearly took the lead, breaking from the start of the 2nd and 3rd sets. His quality of the first ball made the difference, Musetti having all the trouble in the world to return it (80% success for the Pole). The Italian did not convert any of his 4 break points, also committing 7 double faults. Hurkacz, he seems in great shape before probably tackling the big challenge of his fortnight in the round of 16 against Novak Djokovic who will have to get rid of Stan Wawrinka at the end of the day.
