Paula Badosa’s Disappointment: A Painful Withdrawal at Wimbledon

Paula Badosa’s facial expression spoke volumes.

Disappointed with her injury-related withdrawal in the second round in Wimbledon against the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the number 35 in the world sat at the press conference – and was actually congratulated on the supposed victory.

“I lost,” Badosa first interrupted the reporter, who was undeterred and continued his question.

“You have recently missed a few matches due to injuries. Can you give us an update on your fitness and self-confidence?” The reporter asked Badosa, whose Wimbledon dream had recently been shattered due to recurring back pain.

Badosa paused at first, trying to clear the confusion. “FYI, I lost – not won,” said the 25-year-old.

“No?” the reporter replied, persisting in his inquiry about her fitness.

“Well, I don’t feel at my best,” Badosa said, clearly annoyed. “I just had to retire. So I wish I could feel better.”

A little later she confirmed that she would not be able to compete in mixed doubles with her partner Stefanos Tsitsipas. “No, I won’t be able to.”

“It’s gotten a little worse,” she also described her condition. “So I’m going to need a few days off and talk to my team and see what I do over the next few days and weeks.”

During the preparatory tournament for the French Open in Rome in May, Badosa suffered a stress fracture in his spine. After her opening win at Wimbledon, the pain came back, according to Badosa. “I wanted to try it in the game but I think it was the wisest thing to quit.”
