One day after her 100-meter triumph, Germany’s sprint superstar Gina Lückenkemer surprisingly led the Berlin relay to gold at the national championships on Sunday (July 9th, 2023). In the long jump, Simon Batz managed a surprise.

In 43.91 seconds, Berlin set a best performance of the year for relays at the finals in Kassel’s Auestadion, mainly thanks to the outstanding performance of anchor runner Lückenkemper.

“Just a great team effort”

Although there was another time-end with the favorites from Sindelfingen and Munich after their performance, the four Berliners cheered as if they had secured the title. Your feeling was not deceptive: Sindelfingen (44.37) then remained wafer-thin ahead of Munich (44.44) above the Berlin mark – Lückenkemper together with Nadine Reetz, Michelle Janiak and Leonie Kluwig had won the championship title.

In the Sportschau interview, Lückenkemper then said: “My plan was to go all the way, so if so, then yes, my girls know the job, I know my job, that was just a great team effort.”

Wattenscheid WINS the men

TV Wattenscheid secured gold for men. Michael Bryan, Kevin Ugo, Robin Erewa and Joshua Koßmann sprinted to gold in 39.39, silver was secured by Hamburger SV (39.49) just ahead of MTG Mannheim (39.74).

Hammerwerfen – Klose holt Gold

Hammer throwing talent seems to be hereditary – Sören Klose from Frankfurt then proved this.

The son of the 1998 European Championship bronze medalist, Kirsten Münchow, and the successful hammer thrower Holger Klose won the gold medal in 73.90 meters ahead of Konstantion Steinfurth (Eppstein, 68.33) and his training partner and club colleague Christoph Gleixner (67.65 ).

There was a scandal in the hammer throw competition for last year’s winner and co-favorite Merlin Hummel from Kulmbach. Because the 4th of the European Games on June 24 in Poland (there he had thrown 73.99 meters) submitted his pitch card too late shortly before the competition in Kassel, he was disqualified and was only allowed to throw out of competition. He threw the hammer at the second best distance – but he was not allowed to receive silver because of the reporting error.

Long jump – Batz dethroned Heinle

In the long jump, Simon Batz managed a big surprise. In his sixth and last attempt, he managed a giant leap of 7.97 meters – dethroning last year’s Mannheim winner Fabian Heinle (7.70 / Stuttgart), who ultimately only finished third behind the long-leading Luka Herden (7.91 / Münster).

Bad luck for Kevin Bucha from Jena, who only missed the podium by three centimeters behind Heinle.

Shot put – Gambetta confidently in front

There was a favorite victory in the shot putters. Sara Gambetta easily withstood the pressure of being the favorite and won in the end with a clear lead of 60 centimetres. Yemisi Ogunleye from Mannheim (17.91) came closest to the 18.51 meters of Halle, she was very happy about silver. Third place went to Julia Ritter from Bochum (17.79).

400 meter hurdles – Krafzik top, thriller for men

Just as dominant as Gambetta in the ring was the triumph of top favorite Carolina Krafzik from Sindelfingen in the 400-meter hurdles shortly afterwards. In 54.87 seconds, she gave Eileen Demes (55.72 / Neu-Isenburg) and bronze winner Melanie Böhm (56.17 / Sindelfingen) no chance on the home straight.

The men’s race was completely different. Joshua Abuaku from Frankfurt took a huge lead over the last 100 meters, but then Constantin Preis from Sindelfingen turned up the heat. Both athletes then had 48.45 seconds on the clock at the finish line, but Abuaku was declared the winner via photo finish. Bronze went to Darius Gußmann from Frankfurt (50.79) by a clear margin.

High Jump / Javelin- Jungfleisch and Hussong in front

In the women’s high jump it was favorite time again: Marie-Laurence Jungfleisch from Stuttgart won in the internationally uncompetitive height of 1.84 meters, ahead of three runners-up: Laura Gröll (Munich), Lavinja Jürgens (Rettenberg) and Anna- Sophie Schmitt (Saarbrücken) ended up with the same number of failed attempts at 1.81.

As expected, Christin Hussong from Zweibrücken won the javelin throw with 56.79 meters, the podium was completed by Dana Bergrath (Leverkusen/56.11) and Victoria Krause (Leichlingen/55.66).

Run – Gold for Trost and Sanders

Katharina Trost (Munich) won the women’s 1,500 meter run in 4:09.5 minutes. The men’s competition was won by Marius Probst from Bohum in 3:46.73.

In the men’s 400 meters, Manuel Sanders from Dortmund was clearly ahead in 45.07 seconds.

Skadi Schier from Berlin won the women’s gold in 51.84.

It was exciting for the men over 800 meters, in the end Luis Oberbeck from Göttingen prevailed here in 1:47.48 minutes. The women’s race was won by Alina Ammann from Essingen in 2:01.42 seconds, just four hundredths of a second ahead of Christian Hering from Munich.
