Isaac Ogando to be Inducted into Dominican Sports Hall of Fame

THE NEW DIARY, SANTO DOMINGO-. After half a century linked to sports activities, time in which he has transformed sport into his province, recognition and glory will knock on Isaac Ogando’s door.

The native of Bayaguana, Monte Plata, will achieve his highest award next November when the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame immortalizes him within the Class of 2023.

Ogando will be exalted during the LVII Ceremonial scheduled for November, the president of the Permanent Committee of the Hall of Fame announced Thursday.

Dr. Dionisio Guzmán said that, after an evaluation of his sports curriculum, the members of the institution voted for Isaac to recognize his contribution to the development and dissemination of sports throughout Monte Plata. And particularly in Bayaguana.

Ogando is the first choice revealed by the Hall of Fame, out of 12 athletes who will be distinguished as immortals.

“With the choice of Isaac Ogando Rojas, the Hall of Fame officially begins the work of its Ceremonial number 57,” explained Guzmán.

Ogando has been vital in the sporting development of Monte Plata, to the point that four athletes from that province have been Olympic medalists, three of whom come from Bayaguana.

This is Gabriel Mercedes, from Monte Plata, winner of a silver medal in the taekwondo tournament of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, China, in -58 kilograms.

Ogando is the first of two athletes who will embrace immortality as promoters, a choice that falls on the members of the Permanent Committee, which, together with Guzmán, make up Atilio de Frías, Anselmo Bello Ferreras, José Antonio Rodríguez Conde (Joselin), William Duke, Magnolia Concepción, Niurca Herrera, Héctor Lizardo Jorge, Marcos Jiménez, Rubén Andújar Scheker, Rafael Damirón, José Pío Santana, Luis Ramón Cordero, Juan A. Niemen and Rafael Villalona Calero.

The Bayaguanero was born on November 4, 1954 and 14 years later he had already dabbled in sports, in whose adolescence he practiced the disciplines of baseball, softball, athletics, chess, judo, volleyball, soccer and karate.

He founded and/or chaired most of the sports associations in Monte Plata, such as those for baseball, basketball, volleyball, athletics, Olympic wrestling, judo, chess, weightlifting, karate, softball, cycling, table tennis, handball, and boxing. .

Due to his dedication to service and leadership ability, he chaired two sports associations on more than one occasion.

Ogando founded in 1984 and was the first president of the Bayaguana Sports Union. In addition, between 1990 and 2012 he was a prominent member of the boards of the wrestling, track and field, and badminton federations.

One of his most important tasks was when he presided over the technical direction of the 2006 Monte Plata National Sports Games.

In 2019 he was Honorary President of the Exaltation Ceremony of the Pavilion of Fame.
