The Korean badminton team will participate in the World Badminton Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 500 Korea Open held in Yeosu, Korea from July 18th to 23rd, and start quenching for the Hangzhou Asian Games to be held in September.
The Korea Open was first held in 1991 and has been canceled three times in 1998, 2020, and 2021 due to the foreign exchange crisis and the spread of coronavirus infection (Corona 19), and resumed again in 2022.
‘Shuttlecock genius’ Ahn Se-young became the women’s singles champion at last year’s Korea Open, and Korea also won the women’s doubles (Jung Na-eun-Kim Hye-jeong) and men’s doubles (Seo Seung-jae-Kang Min-hyuk) championships at the World Tour event held at home.
This Korea Open is an important tournament where ranking points are calculated to participate in Paris 2024, and many of the world’s top players will participate.
In particular, for Asian players, this competition is an important opportunity to check each other’s skills as a preparation step before participating in the Hangzhou Asian Games.
In badminton, the top rankers are mostly Asian players, so the Asian Games are more competitive than the World Championships or the Olympics.
The national team plans to wash away the no-medal shame at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games by aiming for medals in all events at the Hangzhou Games this September.
Korea Open 2023: Korean squad
The recently rising Korean badminton team will compete in the BWF World Tour Super 500 Korea Open held at home.
The Korea Open, which will be held in Yeosu, Korea for six days from the 18th to the 23rd, is a Super 500 level competition, and with the 2024 Paris Olympics ranking points at stake, a large number of world-class players will participate. About 550 players from 30 countries around the world will gather in Yeosu to compete for ranking points.
Ahn Se-young, who is ranked 2nd in the world rankings (1st in the tour rankings), has many mountains to overcome in order to win her 2nd consecutive victory following last year. World-class athletes such as No. 1 Yamaguchi Akane (Japan), Tai Chi Ying (3rd) of Chinese Taipei, and Chen Yufei (4th) of the People’s Republic of China all participated and looked at the top of the podium.
Since last May, the BWF has been calculating points for allocating Olympic berths for five events: men’s and women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.
In addition to Ahn Se-young, who competes in the women’s singles, last year’s winners Jeong Na-eun and Kim Hye-jeong in the women’s doubles, and Seo Seung-jae and Kang Min-hyeok in the men’s doubles will also compete to defend their throne.
In addition, mixed doubles Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yoo-jeong (4th), who reached the Jeonyeong Open final in March, are also heading to Yeosu with the determination to show off their good looks in front of their home fans.
