Teddy Riner Adjusts Competition Schedule for Olympic Preparations

On August 6, Teddy Riner was scheduled to compete in the Masters in Budapest (in +100 kg) which brings together the world cream of each category. “Teddy won’t be competing right now, not until September, October or November. We really focus on training, ”says Franck Chambily, Riner’s eternal coach. Would the Guadeloupean be injured? “No”, assures his coach.

“It’s really too early, two months after a World Championship which scores 2,000 points (in the ranking), he left a lot of physical and psychological energy, justifies Chambily. Putting the cover back two months later, with Teddy’s track record and longevity, on a Masters with the 32 best, it’s equivalent to doing a World Championship again. No interest. […]We must not burn the cartridges, Teddy is expected in July 2024.” At the Olympic Games in Paris, where Riner will seek a third individual title in +100 kg after those of 2012 and 2016 (3rd in 2021 in +100 kg, 1st in par mixed team).

Participation in the European Championships not ruled out

The Masters in Budapest had initially been ticked on Riner’s agenda because it brings in particular precious points in the ranking (1,800 for the winner), important in the perspective of being seeded at the 2024 Olympics and thus avoiding take on a few top names before the quarter-finals; as was the case in 2021 in Tokyo. “It’s sure that he will lose points but we will do one or two competitions between now and the end of the year, there are quite a few left with in particular the Grand Slams in Baku (22-24 September), Abu Dhabi (October 24-26) or Tokyo (December 2-3). Teddy will do competitions but better distributed in his season, ”specifies Chambily again. What about the European Championships in Montpellier from November 3 to 5? “We’ll see, we don’t refrain from doing them,” replies the coach.

Heavyweight world champion for the eleventh time, on May 13 in Doha, Teddy Riner remained mobilized to participate in the French Team Championships, on May 27 in Laval with his club, PSG Judo, crowned for the second year of in a row. Then, the French had had a fortnight of vacation before resuming in Marrakech, which had become his haunt for several years. Then Riner took part in the international camp in Benidorm (Spain) with the rest of the French team. “He was well, motivated, foreigners also came to get him for the randoris (training fights), in particular Saito (Tatsuru, the Japanese whom the French beat in the quarter-finals at the Doha Worlds)”, appreciates Franck Chambily.

The program will be refined in September

After a week of rest, Riner resumes this Monday in Marrakech until July 26. Then in the absence of Budapest, he will go on an internship in Italy where Darcel Yandzi now exercises (European champion in -78 kg in 1993), renowned for his physical and explosive dimension. “Darcel told me there are a few heavyweights I want to go see,” said Chambily, always looking for a rich and varied adversity for his champion. The last fortnight of August, Teddy Riner will leave for his island of origin, in Guadeloupe, for a block of physical preparation. Before a return to mainland France at the beginning of September where a point will be made with his staff in order to consider which competitions he will participate in by the end of the year.
