Chronology of Cases of Alleged Extortion in League 1 Referee Selection

Jakarta, CNNIndonesia

Alleged extortion (pungli) in the referee selection process Liga 1 and League 2 for the 2023/2024 season is in the spotlight. The following is a chronology of cases of alleged extortion in the selection of referees in League 1 and League 2.

PSSI held a selection of referees for League 1 and League 2 last June 15-16. The process was followed by 161 referees, two FIFA assistant referees, and one AFC Elite Referee referee.

To improve the quality of the selection, PSSI cooperates with the Japanese Football Association (JFA) during the process. Two JFA officials Yoshimi Ogawa and Toshiyugi Nagi directly monitored the selection of League 1 referees.

Out of a total of 164 participants, 55 referees took the lead test for League 1 matches. A total of 27 referees plus one AFC Elite Referee referee passed. Then 18 referees were chosen to officiate in League 1 matches and the rest in League 2.

However, allegations of extortion have colored the selection of referees for League 1. This was stated by the Coordinator of Save Our Soccer, Akmal Marhali, who said that there was a double over in order to get a place on the gridiron.

Akmal said that transactions took place ‘under the table’ to make it easier for prospective referees to pass the selection. He said that there were prospective referees who were asked to pay Rp. 500,000 so they could leak the answers to the written test.

Then there is also a request to pay Rp. 1 million so that he can be assisted in passing the physical test and the Law of the Game (LOTG). The test itself consists of three categories, namely the Physical Test (60 points), the LOTG Test (20 points), and the Video Test (20 points).

Responding to allegations of serious violations, Bareskrim Polri through the Anti-Mafia Bola Task Force summoned PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir as the start of investigating this case. Erick was summoned by the police on Monday (17/7).

Erick sent a director with the initials ‘A’ who has the status of director of refereeing. Until this news was written, PSSI had not given an official response.

CNNIndonesia.com has contacted Exco PSSI member Arya Sinulingga. However, the interview request has not been ignored by the person concerned.
