Nyheim Hines, runner of the Buffalo Billssuffered a jet ski accident that caused a knee injury that will cause him to miss the 2023 NFL season.
The incident occurred while Hines was immobile on his jet ski and was struck by another individual riding another jet ski, the league reported Monday through its NFL Network channel.
The severity of the 26-year-old’s knee injury will force him to undergo surgery.
The Buffalo team acquired Nyheim Hines in the middle of last season from the Indianapolis Colts.
Victim of the salary crisis that running backs are going through in the NFL, Hines accepted, this offseason, a cut in his salary to remain with the Bills in 2023.
His role in the team led by coach Sean McDermott became relevant thanks to his versatility, which allowed him to be used on punts, in which he made two returns for touchdowns last year.
In addition to being the main weapon at that position this season, the Garner, North Carolina-born was emerging as one of the options in the Bills’ run game along with James Cook, Damien Harris and Latavius Murray.
Who will replace him?
Without Hines, Buffalo will have to choose between Deonte Harty, Khalil Shakir or Micah Hyde as its new strongman on kick returns.
The former college football star for the NC State Wolfpac finished the 2022 season with a career-high 707 punt return yards, which he began with the Colts in 2018 after he was selected in the fourth round of that year’s Draft.
The Bills’ training camp will begin this Tuesday. The first of the three preseason games that Buffalo will hold will be on August 12 against the Colts, on the 19th they will play with the Pittsburgh Steelers and on the 26th against the Chicago Bears.
The Bills will open the 2023 NFL season against the New York Jets on September 11.
