German Judokas Shine at FISU Games 2023 with Silver and Bronze Medals

“I didn’t go into the competition with the expectation that I could fight for the medals here because the level is so high here. Winning the silver medal is all the better,” said a beaming Samira Bock after her competition. On her way to the final, the German remained flawless and beat, among others, Irene Pedrotti from Italy, the runner-up U23 European champion of 2021. In the final, the favored Japanese Mayu Honda was waiting for Bock. The athlete from TSV Großhadern kept up well against the 18-year-old from the motherland of judo, but in the end she ran into the deep technique of the Japanese. “Unfortunately, I slept a bit in the final,” Bock looked back. Still, it was an excellent day on the competition mats for her to win the silver medal. “It was a lot of fun and I’m very happy to be able to take part in this cool event,” summed up the newly crowned silver medalist.

A short time before that, Agatha Schmidt also cheered the German team. The athlete from the University of Cologne won the “small final” against Flavia Favorini from Italy. The student from the Information Systems department had fought her way through the preliminary round without any problems. In the quarterfinals Chaewon Shin from South Korea. Schmidt had to admit defeat against the seventh of the Grand Slam in Ulaanbaatar, but got back on the road to success in the consolation round. With a win against Beibei Feng from China, Schmidt made it perfect for the fight for third place. There Schmidt won against the Italian and seventh of the Grand Slams of Tbilisi prematurely with an ippon. So the third medal for the German judoka at the FISU Games 2023 was in the bag.

For the men, Jano Rübo (SRH HS) and Michel Adam (TU Munich) showed good fights, but just didn’t make it into the placement area. In the first round of the weight class up to 73 kilograms, Rübo faced Tatsuki Ishihara from Japan, who later won the race. Despite a good performance by the German, the Japanese won early and ended the Bonner’s day. In the class up to 81 kilograms, Adam won his first fight against the American Emiliano Saucedo Goldschmidt with an ippon. In the second round, Joonhwan Lee (South Korea) was a size too big for the Munich student. The fourth in the world rankings won prematurely against the German. “In the end, the men are missing the last bit to advance into the placements. Nevertheless, they are performing well against the strong international competition,” summarized Andreas Reeh, coach of the men’s team at the FISU Games 2023.

The final decisions in the individual competitions are on the agenda for tomorrow, Monday. The men start in the weight classes up to 90, up to 100 and plus 100 kilograms. For women, the classes up to 78 and plus 78 kilograms are on the agenda.
