The French Tennis Federation (FFT) announced on Monday that Fiona Ferro and Benjamin Bonzi were the two beneficiaries of a wild card for the US Open (August 28 – September 10), the last Grand Slam of the season. These invitations are granted under a reciprocal agreement between the FFT and the American Federation (USTA), providing for an exchange of wild cards between Roland-Garros and the US Open.
Fiona Ferro (26) is currently ranked 256th in the world. The one who was 39th in March 2021 continues her rise to the top 100 after having stopped tennis for several months (she filed a complaint in August 2022 against her former coach Pierre Bouteyre for repeated rape and sexual assault): final at ITF 60 $000, qualification for the main draw of Roland-Garros and victory in the $60,000 of Biarritz. At the US Open, Ferro’s best performance, now coached by Eric Winogradsky, is a 3rd round in 2019.
Benjamin Bonzi (27) left the top 100 two weeks ago after being part of it for almost two years. The fault of an injury to the left wrist which prevents him from hitting his backhand with both hands normally. Returning to competition on the lawn of Stuttgart after notably missing Roland-Garros, the Gardois, 42nd in February, is on a series of 5 defeats.
