Assumed Scutto she did it again, and got on the podium again at the Masters! Just over seven months after her third place in Jerusalem, the twenty-year-old Neapolitan also won the bronze medal at the Hungary Masters in Budapest.
And with her, Italy also obtained three seventh places with Veronica Toniolo in the 57 kg and with Elio Manzi and Matteo Piras in the 66 kg.
Not bad for the first day of competition in the Laszlo Papp Arena.
As always, Assunta Scutto’s race in the 48 kg was extraordinary, which began with the victory over the Chinese Zongying Guo after passing the first round as seed number one. A wazari of the Mongolian Baasankhuu Bavuudorj forced Scutto to recoveries, in which she won with two wazari on Catarina Costa (Por) and a wazari on Milica Nikolic (Srb)
In the 57 kg Veronica Toniolo won over the Chinese Qi Cai and the Georgian Eteri Liparteliani, before giving way to Haruka Funakubo (Jon) in the quarterfinals and Daria Bilodid (Ukr) in the added time.
Two significant victories also those of Elios Manzi in the 66 kg, who got the better of Yashar Najafov (Aze) and David Garcia Torne (Esp), to then yield to Denis Vieru (Mda) and, in recovery, to Erkhembayar Battogtokh ( mgl). Excellent victories also those obtained by Matteo Piras in the 66 kg, who eliminated Tal Flicker (Isr) and Walide Khyar (Fra), to then stop in front of An Baul (Kor) and, in the recovery, Narmandakh Bayanmunkh (Uae ).
Bad day instead for Odette Giuffrida who, in the 52 kg, after the victory over Kelly Deguchi (Can), was ‘mocked’ by the timing of the Chinese Yeqing Zhu who, on the attack of the blue, took the right time to avoid and crush: wazari. And in less than a minute any recovery attempt was impossible. Immediately out in the 52 kg also Giulia Carna, surpassed by the Azeri Gultaj Mammadaliyeva with a wazari scored after the first minute. Nothing to do even for Thauany David Capanni Dias in the 57 kg who, against the Olympic champion in Tokyo Nora Gjakova, was defeated by an arm lock. In the 60 kg Angelo Pantano was eliminated by Ryuju Nagayama’s sode tsuri komi goshi, who was then the winner of the category, while Francesca Milani lost for wazari in the golden score with the Kazakh Tynbayeva.
Tomorrow only three Azzurri will compete with Giovanni Esposito and Manuel Lombardo in the 73 kg and Antonio Esposito in the 81 kg.

Assunta Scutto: “It’s a satisfaction because I never expect anything from the races, obviously I came here to win and the match in the quarterfinals left a bitter taste in my mouth. it was difficult to recover and go up for the repechage but I think that to become a champion you have to face these things too and so I’m satisfied because I managed to go on and win the repechage and take the medal. Because I deserved it and so I took it. My goal is to become the strongest of all, because my dream is to win the Olympics and therefore I must necessarily become the strongest. This second medal at the Masters makes me understand that I am on the right track to go to the Olympics, however always confirming yourself in the block of the finals means that you are always among the five strongest in the world and gives you hope of being able to bring a medal to the Olympics too , so I’m happy. With this result I should become the first in the world and if that’s really the case I’m satisfied to be number one in the world ranking. I wanted to thank my membership club Fiamme Gialle and FIJLKAM for supporting me during this period by allowing me to be followed by my coach Antonio Ciano on the chair, obviously a huge thank you to all the National staff who supported me strongly even today. Veronica Toniolo: “If they had told me two weeks ago that I would have fought like this I would have put my signature on it, today I say that I could have done even more. It was a difficult period, full of obstacles that I hadn’t faced in a while. Absolutely not even 60% physically I found myself doing one of the hardest races there is, proving to myself once again how important the head is at these levels. I’m really sorry because the way things had turned out and the way I was fighting we could have collected more and definitely made it to the final 3-5. However, what I said at the beginning remains and so I’m happy with how I was able to react to the race and this bad period but above all I’m even more confident in my abilities and in what I’ll be able to do in the future”.
Elios Manzi: “The prevailing emotion for this seventh place is optimism… I’m happy, because I feel that I’m growing more and more and I’m improving on some of my shortcomings. It will get better and better, I’m on the right track.”

Francesco Bruyere: “Today Susy was really well and it showed right from the start. Only one distraction in the match with the Mongolian, which she was managing in the best way demonstrating superiority, blocked her way to the final. She was very good at getting together to face the recoveries and the final against two very difficult opponents who had beaten her in the past, she was lucid and concentrated, she did everything perfectly and settled the score. Two world medals and two at her master’s are so much stuff, endless compliments to her and her sports group of the Fiamme Gialle. For the other girls it was a particular day in which the result, in my opinion, does not reflect the values seen on the pitch; surely the master is a very complicated race, but we could have achieved much more. They were all fine and we lost absolutely dominated fights due to some single and different episodes that I don’t even feel like calling mistakes, we will still work to improve further. Finally, I congratulate Veronica for this seventh place, although not in the best conditions she fought with the great character that distinguishes her, playing on par with the best in the world ”.
