Mathieu van der Poel crashed on the first lap
MADRID, 12 (EUROPA PRESS)
The English cyclist Tom Pidcock was proclaimed world cross-country champion by winning the World Cup event that is taking place in Glasgow (Scotland) this Saturday, marked by the early fall of the Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel.
Van der Poel, five times cyclo-cross world champion, wanted to add a third rainbow to his incredible 2023, after Hoogerheide in February and last week on the road in this ‘Super World Cup’. A historic achievement that died on the first lap of the circuit due to a fall.
Olympic champion Pidcock took the early lead, breaking the race with two laps to go at Glentress Forest. New Zealand’s Sam Gaze was second while last year’s champion, Swiss Nino Schurter, was third.
Regarding the Spanish performance, David Valero, runner-up in the world in 2022, finished 24th after suffering a mishap with his shoe on the first lap, which relegated him to 69th position. The man from Granada changed his shoe and showed great form in a great comeback in which he brushed the ‘Top 20’.
On the other hand, Jofre Cullell was 26th and David Campos, who was playing his first elite world championship, was 36th. Pablo Rodríguez, for his part, did not have his best day and finished in 62nd position.
In addition, Rocío García from Madrid, 34th, was the best national representative in an elite race that was again dominated by the French Pauline Ferrand Prevot.
