In Viedma, Governor Arabela Carreras presided over the official launch of the 30th edition of the Araucanía Binational Games, which will be held in the province of Río Negro from November 12 to 17.
The presentation was given within the framework of the meeting of sports authorities from Argentine Patagonia and southern Chile, which lasted until Tuesday and whose purpose was to finalize details for the Games.
The Governor warmly welcomed the delegation of sports representatives and stated that “we have been investing in infrastructure and we wanted the Games to cover the regions of the province and not focus on just one.”
The event carried out in School 1 of the provincial capital, also had the presence of Lieutenant Governor Alejandro Palmieri; the provincial secretary of Sport, Diego Rosati; the secretary of Sport of La Pampa and president of the Executive Committee of Araucanía, Ceferino Almudévar; the mayor of Choele Choel, Diego Ramello; legislators, ministers, sports authorities from Argentine and Chilean Patagonia, sports leaders, local athletes and the media.
The president of Chubut Deportes, Gustavo Hernández, present at the launch event and the Executive Committee’s work week, was “happy and pleased to be able to participate in this important meeting. All the details for these Games have already been finalized and the truth is that they were three very important days of work and we believe that everything is in good condition for what is to come”.
The Chubut official assured that by November “we will come with a complete team and we will try to get the best possible results. We know that Río Negro and La Pampa are powerful, but we will try to play a good role and leave the province well represented”.
This will be the third time that Río Negro will host the venue, in this case having as venues Bariloche (volleyball, women’s soccer and judo), Cipolletti (men’s soccer), Viedma (basketball and cycling) and Choele Choel (swimming). In addition, Neuquén will give up its athletics track for the competition of this discipline.
At the launch, the person who will be the mascot of these Games was also announced: Meulén. It is a huemul, a species that is in danger of extinction both in Argentina and Chile and that perfectly illustrates the city of Bariloche as one of the venues. On the other hand, the name chosen for this little friend means “whirlwind” in Mapudungun.
For the election of the mascot, it was sought that it not only represent the impressive fauna of Río Negro, but also that it embrace the ideals of the competition: to strengthen and strengthen bonds of union and friendship between the regions and provinces of southern Chile and Argentina.
