Was it a bee? Tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas first hit the racket. Then he discovered the source of the buzzing behind him.
Tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas was disturbed in a bizarre way during a tennis match in Cincinnati. The fact that spectators call out to the players from time to time is almost the rule. But one woman particularly annoyed the player.
At first it looked in the second set against the American Ben Shelton as if Tsitsipas wanted to drive away an annoying insect with his bat. Twice he broke off the movement on serve. But then he walked to the referee’s chair.
The referee wanted to know what was bothering him. “There’s a person imitating a bee behind me. I hear a buzz just before I serve. Is that okay?” asked the Greek, who was once number three in the world rankings.
He turned towards the audience, as can be seen on video recordings, and looked for the culprit. And from there there was help: a fan pointed to a woman sitting in the front row. Tsitsipas demanded that the troublemaker be thrown out. But the referee left it at a warning and a request to stop the buzzing. The woman then apologized to the athlete.
Without the distraction, Tsitsipas got back into the game and won the match 7: 6, 7: 6. In the round of 16 he meets Hubert Hurkacz from Poland.
