“Valmiera Glass/Vidzeme Augstskola” has announced that the former head coach of “VEF basketball academy in Valka” Jānis Butāns has joined the coaching staff. Butans, together with Kaspars Veczvagaras, will assist the head coach Oskars Virsi in the upcoming season. Also, Butāns has been appointed as the head coach of the “Bertānus Valmiera basketball school” unit of the “Ramirent” National Basketball League (NBL or LBL2).

“Thank you to the leaders of Valmiera basketball life for seeing in me the appropriate qualities to start negotiations on joining the club’s coaching staff, as well as Bertāns Valmiera basketball school. From the very first meeting, there was a feeling that we were looking in the same direction, how the NBL team and the Valmiera club should interact in order to facilitate the transition of young people from the youth team to the adult team. The decision to join did not have to be considered for a long time, because Valmiera has a very organized environment for the growth of young people – modern infrastructure, educational opportunities for secondary and higher education, as well as professional colleagues with whom to discuss trends in basketball. And most importantly, motivated young people. See you on the field,” Butāns was excited about joining the Valmiera basketball structure.

As already mentioned above, Bhutan led the “VEF basketball academy in Valka” team last season. The team he led finished the regular season in seventh place in the NBL Eastern Conference. Butāns previously also worked at the Riga basketball school “Ķeizars”. His resume also includes experience in Latvian youth national teams – he was the head coach of the U14 national team, as well as the second coach of the U18 and U20 national teams. Already this summer, he managed to get involved in the basketball life of Valmiera, taking part as a coach in “Brāļu Bertāns Master Class 2023”.

“A valuable addition to Valmiera basketball. In recent years, Jānis has done a good job in Valka, working directly with young basketball players. It will now be possible to continue it in our system. I am glad that Jānis chose Valmiera. Good luck!” said the club’s head coach Oskars Virsis.
