Tatami: Groundbreaking Iranian-Israeli Collaboration to Debut at Venice International Film Festival

Tatami: The first feature film co-directed by Iranian and Israeli directors will be presented on 2 September. The film will be part of the “Orizzonti” competition at the 80th Venice International Film Festival.

Who are the directors of “Tatami”?

The directors are Israeli Guy Nattiv Iranian actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi who also plays one of the lead roles. Zar Amir winner of the best actress award last year at the Cannes Film Festival she fled Iran and has been living in France since 2008.

Cast

The cast consists of Arienne Mandi (THE L WORD: GENERATION Q), Zar Amir Ebrahimi (HOLY SPIDER), and finally, Jaime Ray Newman (THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE, DOPESICK).

Synopsis

Midway through the Judo World Championships, Iranian judo fighter Leila (Mandi) and her coach Maryam (Amir Ebrahimi), receive an ultimatum from the Islamic Republic ordering Leila to fake an injury and lose, for fear of being branded a traitor to the state. With her and her family’s freedom at stake, Leila is faced with an impossible choice: obey the Iranian regime as her coach Maryam implores her to do, or keep fighting, for the gold.
