I Carabinieri of the Rome Provincial Headquarters carried out a series of anti-drug checks which led, in agreement with the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office, to thearrest of 18 people and al seizure of thousands of doses of narcotics – between cocaine, hashish, marijuana and crack – and approximately 5,000 euros, deemed to be the proceeds of illicit activities.
The operations were concentrated in the most frequented areas of the centre moved (Trastevere, Termini, Esquilino, Nomentano) and in the well-known drug dealing squares of the Roman suburbs (Tufello, Serpentara, Tor Bella Monaca).
In particular, in via Principe Amedeo, the Carabinieri of the Operations Unit of the Rome Piazza Dante Company surprised a 33-year-old from Gambia, homeless and with a record, as he gave a few doses of heroin to a young man. To avoid scrutiny, the 33-year-old began to squirm, resisting vigorously, and swallowed more drug wrappers. He was arrested and taken to the “San Giovanni-Addolorata” hospital, where he is guarded while waiting for the involucres to be expelled, the presence of which in the stomach has been ascertained by instrumental tests.
The same Carabinieri also arrested a 50-year-old Roman, already known to the police, who, noticed confabulating with two other people in viale della Venezia Giulia, was subjected to a check. At the sight of the Carabinieri, the man showed excessive and unjustified nervousness which prompted the military to investigate further and carry out a personal search, finding 85 g of cocaine hidden in his briefs.
In via Giovanni Amendola, on the other hand, the Carabinieri of the Operations Unit of the Rome Piazza Dante Company arrested a 37-year-old Algerian who was surprised to give a few doses of cocaine to an Italian citizen. Stopped and searched, he was found in possession of 12 wrappers containing cocaine concealed in his trouser pocket, 5 doses of hashish concealed inside the cap worn and 12 wrappers of crack concealed inside the sandals worn.
Finally, the Carabinieri of the Frascati Company’s Operations Section arrested a 19-year-old Roman who, noticed wandering around in a well-known drug dealing square in via dell’Archeologia, was approached for a check. Having seen the Carabinieri, the young man climbed onto the balcony of a popular building to avoid control but was immediately blocked and found in possession of 129 doses of cocaine, some doses of hashish and 980 euros in cash.
The other suspects were caught giving doses of drugs to buyers, all identified and reported to the Prefecture as users.
The arrests were validated.
It should be noted that the proceedings are in the preliminary investigation phase, for which the suspects are to be considered innocent until a final sentence is issued.
