Jérémy Doku and the Other Top Talents: Where Are They Now?

Do you remember when the name Jérémy Doku first hit the national media? Well, the upcoming top transfer from Manchester City was one of the eleven top talents that Marc Coucke linked to Anderlecht five years ago at a striking press moment. But what about the other ten top talents of that time?

Mathis Suray (FC Dordrecht)

Left Anderlecht in 2020 without ever making minutes for the A-squad. “Without any explanation, we received a letter saying that he had to go,” his father once said bitterly.

“In the end, we thank Anderlecht for the motivation. I hope that one day we can put a signed shirt in Jean Kindermans’ mailbox.”

The midfielder then moved to the Dutch second division club FC Dordrecht, where he is now captain.

Anouar Ait El Hadj (Racing Genk)

At the age of just 17, he got his chance from Simon Davies. Showed his talent afterwards (with whims) under Vincent Kompany, but disappeared completely into the background with Felice Mazzu.

El Hadj even refused to play with the reserves out of dissatisfaction – a decision he later apologized for.

Found a new challenge at Racing Genk in the winter of last season, where he was unable to conquer a role as a titular for the time being.

“It’s my own fault that it went downhill”, El Hadj later said about his downfall at Anderlecht. “I was 18 years old and thought everything would go by itself.”

Lucas Lissens (Anderlecht)

Should make his debut with the main force in 2020 under Vincent Kompany. That went in a minor way: the defender then took a red card against KV Oostende for a solid tackle.

Subsequently, he only played five times for the A-squad due to injuries, but remained fit last season and played 27 matches for the Futures.

Halim Timassi (Union)

Left Anderlecht in 2021 after ten years without ever making minutes for the A-team. Then moved to Union, where he is currently part of the reserves.

According to his LinkedIn profile, he also studies law at the ULB in Brussels.

Killian Sardella (Anderlecht)

Already counts 71 matches for Anderlecht. Made his debut at the age of just 17 under Simon Davies and then bounced between base and bench.

Seems to be winning the competition with newcomer Louis Patris at the moment.

Loic Masscho (Anderlecht)

Still active for Anderlecht. The 21-year-old fullback is a regular base player in the Challenger Pro League.

“My big dream is to break through at Anderlecht, that would be a childhood dream come true”, he noted a few months ago.

Commutes between Brussels and Ghent, because he is also pursuing a master’s degree in commercial engineering at Ghent University.

Chris Kalulika (without club)

In 2021, exchanged Anderlecht’s promises for those of KV Mechelen. Afterwards he went to the Dutch Helmond Sport, where he did not make any minutes due to injuries and saw his contract terminated prematurely.

Currently without a club.

Yari Verschaeren (Anderlecht)

Together with Jérémy Doku, he was the greatest talent of the team that gave Marc Coucke a professional contract at the time.

He also lived up to all expectations by shining at Anderlecht and even being selected for the Red Devils. Did have a relapse afterwards, but seemed to relaunch under Brian Riemer.

Only disaster struck just before the play-offs: Verschaeren tore his cruciate ligament and will be sidelined for months.

Antoine Colassin (Anderlecht)

Made a dream debut by immediately scoring in the top match against Club Brugge. Also scored twice in the next three matches and therefore seemed destined to become a revelation at Anderlecht.

Only an ankle injury abruptly slowed the striker down. Afterwards he would never score a goal for Purple & White again. It also failed to score during a loan to Zulte Waregem, at Heerenveen last season (3 times).

Colassin is still with Anderlecht, but was not in the selection in recent weeks and may leave.

Zacarias Antonio (Cappellen)

Chose in 2020 for a striking transfer to the Italian second division club Cosenza. However, never played there and returned to Belgium for (the promises of) Union.

Last week, the 21-year-old fullback signed a contract with traditional club Cappellen from the lower divisions.
