Reflections on Koshien: A Former Coach’s Perspective

During the 14 years he coached Kochi High School, Tatsuji Shimada participated in Koshien nine times and led the nation to victory at the Meiji-Jingu Games. He retired from coaching in the summer of 2018 and moved his coaching position to club teams for elementary and junior high school students. What is the “significance of Koshien” that you think calmly now that you are away from high school baseball? He gave an interview to Number Web.[To #2/#1 of all 2 times]

――It’s already been five years since you left the world of high school baseball, but do you feel lonely at times?

ShimadaYes, we have it. When summer comes, I want it to be hotter. When I was a director, there was a lot of pressure, but I was also excited. Even now, I would be happy if the team wins, but it’s not easy to say “Yes!” from the bottom of my heart like when I’m fighting for Koshien. Of course, when I lose, I’m depressed to the bottom.

――It’s a luxury to be deeply regretted, isn’t it? Because it means that you have a subject that you can be so serious about.

ShimadaWhen a team loses in a summer tournament, at the end of the day, the manager will say something to the players around the ballpark. In our world, we call it the Last Message. In the past, I hated having my last message captured by a TV camera. I talk to the athletes because I have something to say, but when they film me, I end up thinking about the person on the other side of the screen. That would be a lie. So, I’m sorry, but I refused the TV person to shoot. But now, when I see a scene on TV where the director says things like, “I’m sorry we couldn’t let you win,” it blows my mind. I know that feeling. After all, when I see players at Koshien holding down batters or hitting hits and looking very happy, it makes me happy too. That’s why I want to take you there. to Koshien. Yes, because I can think.
