Third Day of Competition at Indian Ocean Islands Games: Reunion Takes Home 26 New Medals

Third day of competition at the Indian Ocean Islands Games in Madagascar, this Monday, August 28, which still has its share of medals and victories in store, with, among other things, judo, taekwondo and swimming competitions… All the results at find here as you go. This Monday, August 28 marks the third day of competition at the Indian Ocean Island Games in Madagascar. Basketball, judo, taekwondo, swimming, weightlifting, table tennis: Reunionese athletes will try to win new medals. Nearly 460 athletes from the Reunion team are taking part in the games in 19 disciplines.

This Monday, it was again in swimming that Reunion won many medals, including 4 gold! Great performance also in taekwondo with 3 gold medals and 1 silver. Gold has also fallen into the hands of Reunionese in judo and weightlifting (two medals)

In total, this Monday, the Reunionese won 26 medals: 10 in gold, 9 in silver, and 7 in bronze.

Since the start of the competition, Reunionese athletes have won a total of 90 medals, including the 26 of this Monday, August 29.

In basketball, end clap for the boys who do not reach the final, since they lost this Monday in the quarter-finals against the Maldives (20-18). “It’s a big disappointment because we really wanted to play for the medal. We lacked preparation, and these are players who don’t have much opportunity to play on 3×3“, commented Stanislas Irrigaraye, the coach of the men’s and women’s 3×3 basketball team.

The girls are doing better, since they played the final against the Madagascans tonight. Despite everything, the meeting ended with a defeat of the Réunionnaises by 21 to 9. The péi team therefore leaves with the silver medal de basket 3×3. “We lacked a bit of toughness but we are there and we fought to the end for Reunion. (…) We are still second and we remain proud“, said Pauline Grondin, the team captain.

“We fell against a very, very strong Malagasy team. They did everything necessary (…) but we fell against stronger so there is nothing to say about it. They are very young players who are between 16 and 19 years old, they have shown an incredible and exemplary maturity. I am very proud and I think I am not the only one ”

New rain of medals for the Réunion selection this Monday! Begining with l’or for Maël Dijoux in the Men’s 1,500m Freestyle this morning.

In the 200m medley (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, crawl), the Reunionese could not compete with the Seychellois (Felicity Passon and Simon Bachmann) who thus won their very first medals of the Games, in the women’s event as masculine. But Reunionese Mahée Gory Lauret wins money, just like Maël Dijoux who also won money on this 200m medley.

But Reunion has not said its last word: in the men’s 200m backstroke final, in which two Reunionese participated out of all the swimmers, Pierre-Yves Desprez brought a new gold medal to pei selection.

In the women’s 200m backstroke, Julie Nadaud finished third behind the Mauritians and won the bronze.

Finally in the 4×100 men’s medley relay, it was the Reunion team who once again brought home l’or, ahead of Mauritius. On the women’s side, our swimmers in the medley relay also achieved the feat, finishing first ahead of the Mauritians, and adding another gold medal.or already spectacular winners of the Réunion selection.

In total in swimming, Reunion counts four gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal on this third day of competition.

In para-swimming 50m freestyle, Lucas Robert from Reunion won the silver medalbehind Mauritius.

Reunion faced Madagascar on the tatami of the Ankorondrano gymnasium this Monday afternoon, in the Ladies team final: the girls obtained the silver medalbowing to Madagascar.

The outcome was more favorable for the men who were able to win over the Mauritians in the team final: Reunion therefore won a new gold medal in judo. They achieve a huge performance since they get an excellent mark.

Vincent Bapin, member of the Reunionese judo team, was proud to end this judo competition on such a high note.

This Monday was already the last day of competition of the JIOI 2023 concerning judo. In total, Reunion has won 7 gold medals in this discipline.

Another fine harvest of medals for Reunionese taekwondo on this third day of the games. This Monday morning took place the Poomsae finals, which allowed Reunion to win three gold medals and one silver:

Paqui Esther (Men 30 years old category), Candice Niclin (Women 30 years old category), Mathilde Thiao Layel (Women 40 years old category) won l’orand Nicolas Thia Song Fat (Men 40 years old category) was silver medal.

Note that all the girls from Reunion present in the competition this Monday left with the gold!

Weightlifting

In weightlifting competition this Monday morning, the Reunionese were awarded five bronze medals This morning Hugo Bevilacqua (81kg category) in the clean and jerk and in the Olympic total won bronze twice, Dan Parasouramin (89Kg category) also took bronze in the snatch, and finally Julien Omar (89kg category) in the clean and jerk and Olympic total, also twice received bronze.

Then this afternoon among the ladies, Lisa Leibunguth wins, in the 76 kg category, the bronze in the snatch and l’or clean and jerk, but also money altogether Olympic.

Finally, the last medals of this day fell in weightlifting this Monday evening: Reunionese Arthur Froger, category 96 kg, won the‘or in the snatch with 119 kg and two silver medals clean and jerk (147 kg) and Olympic total (266 kg).

This represents a total of two gold medals, three silver medals, and six bronze medals won by Reunion weightlifters on Monday!

In Pool B, Reunion and the Comoros neutralize each other (1-1)

Jean-Pierre Bade’s men opened the scoring in the first period, before being joined because of an own goal, during a set piece.

Despite two draws, Reunion qualified for the semi-finals, the same for the Comoros who continued the competition. On the other hand, the Mayotte team is eliminated.

On the team sports side, in the group B group stage, Reunion was opposed to Mayotte this Monday at the start of the afternoon, for the Men’s playoff match. Our pei handball players won over the Mahorais, with a score of 34-19.

At the CCI amphitheater in Antananarivo on Monday afternoon, a good fifteen boxing fights took place. Reunionese Ryan Bieou qualified for the -63.5 kg final during his face-to-face with Seychellois Edrian Eraldine Volcere. Qualification also for Antony Hoarau against the Seychellois Joshua Aaron Cousin, in the -75kg category. In the -92kg final, we will also find Medric Souton, victorious over his Seychellois opponent Dyan Innocent Vidot, and Didier Jean-Baptiste, qualified for the +92kg category final.

On the other hand, in the -60kg category, it is the disappointment for David Moucouveia, who could not complete his match against the Mauritian Jean Jerry Agathe. It was the referee who ended the match for no apparent reason. “We witnessed blatant incompetence on the part of the referee who, in my opinion, did not show neutrality,” said Yoland Chaffre, coach of David Moucouveia.

Reunion lost to the Maldives (3-0) in the men’s team semi-final on Monday morning.

Tennis

In tennis, on Monday Reunion won the Men’s Doubles semi-final against Mauritius, by 2 sets to 0. But the selection was beaten by Madagascar in the Women’s Doubles semi-final (2-1).

Table tennis

In table tennis, disappointment also for Reunion which could not reach the mixed doubles final played this evening, since it was taken out in the round of 16.

All day in Vontovorona was played the petanque tournament of these JIOI, Triplette category. A rather catastrophic day since no Reunionese team will reach the triplet semi-finals. The men lost to Seychelles (13-4) in the quarter-finals, as did the women who lost to Comoros in the quarter-finals as well (13-12).
