Beautiful story. South Sudan, the newest nation on the planet, earned their ticket to the men’s basketball tournament at the 2024 Paris Games. Ranked 62nd in the world by FIBA, the national team clinched their place in of the World Cup, which is currently being played in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines, being the best placed African nation. According to FIBA statistics, South Sudan are also the lowest-ranked team to qualify for a men’s Olympic tournament since the Athens Games in 2004. The Sudanese secured their place for the Paris 2024 Games by dominating Angola (101-78), eleven times African champion. Independent from Sudan since 2011, the country made its Olympic Games debut in London 2012, sending its first athlete, but competed under the Olympic flag. Four years later, at Rio 2016, his delegation included three athletes, present for the first time under the national colors and flags. Two others participated in the Tokyo 2020 Games. The South Sudanese Basketball Federation has been chaired since 2019 by Luol Deng, a former NBA player, who notably worked for the Chicago Bulls, the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Lakers. According to the Sudanese native, raised in Britain, the country does not currently have a single regulation-sized basketball court.
