The Inspiring Journey of Josh Hawkinson: From Baseball Star to Japanese Basketball Sensation

Josh Hawkinson, 28 years old, was a member of the Japan Men’s Basketball Team and made a big splash at the World Cup. After graduating from university, he moved from Seattle in the western United States to Nagoya, where he played for a long time in the B League. He also acquired Japanese citizenship. Who is Hawkinson, who shouted “I’m really glad this man is in Japan!” His father, Mr. Nels, revealed.

Josh Hawkinson never misses an appointment. He was a 17-year-old high school student. One Sunday, after going to church, eating and running errands, he didn’t show up for a family meeting at 6 p.m. . He didn’t even search the house. When his parents worried and looked outside his house, he saw him crying, throwing a baseball, looking up at the sky.

“I’m quitting baseball”

“I was better at baseball than basketball”

Soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, and baseball in the spring. Josh was a “three-sword style” boy. His father, Nels, is a former professional basketball player who played in Norway and his mother, Nancy, in Denmark. That’s why I knew his son’s talent. Nels recalls his high school days.

“He was better at baseball than basketball. As a parent, you can see it. He was 6ft 10in (208cm) and he was throwing a 155kg ball down. It was Randy Johnson, not wild.”

Blake Snell was an upperclassman at Shorewood High School near Seattle, Washington. The star left arm, who later won the Cy Young Award (Best Pitcher Award) in the major leagues, started the pitcher, and Josh, the right arm, sometimes relieved him. Mr. Nels remembers how the major league scouts and general managers (GMs) who came to inspect Snell were surprised, saying, “Who is that? That big tall man.”

Giving up on baseball → Entering college with basketball

That’s when I hurt my right arm. Mr. Nells didn’t say much, but he was so badly hit by the ball that at one point he lost the use of his dominant arm. During that time, he took part in a basketball tournament, where he made all shots with his left hand, including free throws.
